| 1Jude, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, To those who are called, sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ: | 1From Jude, a slave of Jesus Christ and brother of James, to those who are called, wrapped in the love of God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ. |
| 2Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you. | 2May mercy, peace, and love be lavished on you! |
| 3Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. | 3Dear friends, although I have been eager to write to you about our common salvation, I now feel compelled instead to write to encourage you to contend earnestly for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. |
| 4For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ. | 4For certain men have secretly slipped in among you--men who long ago were marked out for the condemnation I am about to describe--ungodly men who have turned the grace of our God into a license for evil and who deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. |
| 5But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. | 5Now I desire to remind you (even though you have been fully informed of these facts once for all) that Jesus, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, later destroyed those who did not believe. |
| 6And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day; | 6You also know that the angels who did not keep within their proper domain but abandoned their own place of residence, he has kept in eternal chains in utter darkness, locked up for the judgment of the great Day. |
| 7as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. | 7So also Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighboring towns, since they indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire in a way similar to these angels, are now displayed as an example by suffering the punishment of eternal fire. |
| 8Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries. | 8Yet these men, as a result of their dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, and insult the glorious ones. |
| 9Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” | 9But even when Michael the archangel was arguing with the devil and debating with him concerning Moses' body, he did not dare to bring a slanderous judgment, but said, "May the Lord rebuke you!" |
| 10But these speak evil of whatever they do not know; and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves. | 10But these men do not understand the things they slander, and they are being destroyed by the very things that, like irrational animals, they instinctively comprehend. |
| 11Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah. | 11Woe to them! For they have traveled down Cain's path, and because of greed have abandoned themselves to Balaam's error; hence, they will certainly perish in Korah's rebellion. |
| 12These are spots in your love feasts, while they feast with you without fear, serving only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried about by the winds; late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, pulled up by the roots; | 12These men are dangerous reefs at your love feasts, feasting without reverence, feeding only themselves. They are waterless clouds, carried along by the winds; autumn trees without fruit--twice dead, uprooted; |
| 13raging waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever. | 13wild sea waves, spewing out the foam of their shame; wayward stars for whom the utter depths of eternal darkness have been reserved. |
| 14Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, | 14Now Enoch, the seventh in descent beginning with Adam, even prophesied of them, saying, "Look! The Lord is coming with thousands and thousands of his holy ones, |
| 15to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.” | 15to execute judgment on all, and to convict every person of all their thoroughly ungodly deeds that they have committed, and of all the harsh words that ungodly sinners have spoken against him." |
| 16These are grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts; and they mouth great swelling words, flattering people to gain advantage. | 16These people are grumblers and fault-finders who go wherever their desires lead them, and they give bombastic speeches, enchanting folks for their own gain. |
| 17But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ: | 17But you, dear friends--recall the predictions foretold by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
| 18how they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts. | 18For they said to you, "In the end time there will come scoffers, propelled by their own ungodly desires." |
| 19These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit. | 19These people are divisive, worldly, devoid of the Spirit. |
| 20But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, | 20But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith, by praying in the Holy Spirit, |
| 21keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. | 21maintain yourselves in the love of God, while anticipating the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that brings eternal life. |
| 22And on some have compassion, making a distinction; | 22And have mercy on those who waver; |
| 23but others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh. | 23save others by snatching them out of the fire; have mercy on others, coupled with a fear of God, hating even the clothes stained by the flesh. |
| 24Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, | 24Now to the one who is able to keep you from falling, and to cause you to stand, rejoicing, without blemish before his glorious presence, |
| 25To God our Savior, Who alone is wise, Be glory and majesty, Dominion and power, Both now and forever. Amen. | 25to the only God our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, power, and authority, before all time, and now, and for all eternity. Amen. |
