Now the apostles and brethren who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.1Now the apostles and the brothers who were in Judea heard that the gentiles had also accepted the word of God.
And when Peter came up to Jerusalem, those of the circumcision contended with him,2But when Peter went up to Jerusalem, those who emphasized circumcision disagreed with him.
saying, “You went in to uncircumcised men and ate with them!”3They said, "You went to uncircumcised men and ate with them!"
But Peter explained it to them in order from the beginning, saying:4Then Peter began to explain to them point by point what had happened. He said,
“I was in the city of Joppa praying; and in a trance I saw a vision, an object descending like a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came to me.5"I was in the town of Joppa praying when in a trance I saw a vision: Something like a large linen sheet descended down from heaven, lowered by its four corners, and it came right down to me.
When I observed it intently and considered, I saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air.6When I examined it closely, I saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild animals, reptiles, and birds of the air.
And I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Rise, Peter; kill and eat.’7I also heard a voice telling me, 'Get up, Peter! Kill something and eat it.'
But I said, ‘Not so, Lord! For nothing common or unclean has at any time entered my mouth.’8But I replied, 'Absolutely not, Lord, for nothing common or unclean has ever entered my mouth!'
But the voice answered me again from heaven, ‘What God has cleansed you must not call common.’9Then the voice from heaven answered a second time, 'You must stop calling common what God has made clean!'
Now this was done three times, and all were drawn up again into heaven.10This happened three times. Then everything was pulled back up to heaven.
At that very moment, three men stood before the house where I was, having been sent to me from Caesarea.11"At that very moment three men arrived at the house where we were staying. They had been sent to me from Caesarea.
Then the Spirit told me to go with them, doubting nothing. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered the man’s house.12The Spirit told me to go with them without hesitating. These six brothers went with me, too, and we entered the house of the man from Caesarea.
And he told us how he had seen an angel standing in his house, who said to him, ‘Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon whose surname is Peter,13Then he told us how he had seen an angel standing in his home and saying, 'Send messengers to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter.
who will tell you words by which you and all your household will be saved.’14He will discuss with you how you and your entire household will be saved.'
And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, as upon us at the beginning.15"When I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as he was first given to us.
Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, ‘John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’16Then I remembered what the Lord had said: 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'
If therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?”17Now if God gave them the same gift that he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus, the Messiah, who was I to try to stop God?"
When they heard these things they became silent; and they glorified God, saying, “Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life.”18When they heard this, they calmed down, and praised God by saying, "So God has given repentance that leads to life even to gentiles."
Now those who were scattered after the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to no one but the Jews only.19Now the people who were scattered by the persecution that started because of Stephen went as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except Jews.
But some of them were men from Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they had come to Antioch, spoke to the Hellenists, preaching the Lord Jesus.20But among them were some men from Cyprus and Cyrene, who came to Antioch and began proclaiming the Lord Jesus even to the Hellenistic Jews.
And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord.21The hand of the Lord was with them, and a large number of people believed and turned to the Lord.
Then news of these things came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent out Barnabas to go as far as Antioch.22When the church in Jerusalem heard this news, they sent Barnabas all the way to Antioch.
When he came and had seen the grace of God, he was glad, and encouraged them all that with purpose of heart they should continue with the Lord.23When he arrived, he rejoiced to see what the grace of God had done, and with hearty determination he kept encouraging all of them to remain faithful to the Lord,
For he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were added to the Lord.24because he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith. And so a large number of people was brought to the Lord.
Then Barnabas departed for Tarsus to seek Saul.25Then Barnabas left for Tarsus to look for Saul.
And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.26When he found him, he brought him to Antioch, and for a whole year they were guests of the church and taught many people. It was in Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians.
And in these days prophets came from Jerusalem to Antioch.27At that time some prophets from Jerusalem came down to Antioch.
Then one of them, named Agabus, stood up and showed by the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine throughout all the world, which also happened in the days of Claudius Caesar.28One of them named Agabus got up and predicted by the Spirit that there would be a severe famine all over the world. This happened during the reign of Claudius.
Then the disciples, each according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brethren dwelling in Judea.29So all of the disciples decided they would send a contribution to the brothers living in Judea, as they were able,
This they also did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.30by sending it through Barnabas and Saul to the elders.
