New International Version | NET Bible |
The LORD said to Moses, | 1Then the LORD spoke to Moses: |
"Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone who has a defiling skin disease or a discharge of any kind, or who is ceremonially unclean because of a dead body. | 2"Command the Israelites to expel from the camp every leper, everyone who has a discharge, and whoever becomes defiled by a corpse. |
Send away male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not defile their camp, where I dwell among them." | 3You must expel both men and women; you must put them outside the camp, so that they will not defile their camps, among which I live." |
The Israelites did so; they sent them outside the camp. They did just as the LORD had instructed Moses. | 4So the Israelites did so, and expelled them outside the camp. As the LORD had spoken to Moses, so the Israelites did. |
The LORD said to Moses, | 5Then the LORD spoke to Moses: |
"Say to the Israelites: 'Any man or woman who wrongs another in any way and so is unfaithful to the LORD is guilty | 6"Tell the Israelites, 'When a man or a woman commits any sin that people commit, thereby breaking faith with the LORD, and that person is found guilty, |
and must confess the sin they have committed. They must make full restitution for the wrong they have done, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the person they have wronged. | 7then he must confess his sin that he has committed and must make full reparation, add one fifth to it, and give it to whomever he wronged. |
But if that person has no close relative to whom restitution can be made for the wrong, the restitution belongs to the LORD and must be given to the priest, along with the ram with which atonement is made for the wrongdoer. | 8But if the individual has no close relative to whom reparation can be made for the wrong, the reparation for the wrong must be paid to the LORD for the priest, in addition to the ram of atonement by which atonement is made for him. |
All the sacred contributions the Israelites bring to a priest will belong to him. | 9Every offering of all the Israelites' holy things that they bring to the priest will be his. |
Sacred things belong to their owners, but what they give to the priest will belong to the priest.'" | 10Every man's holy things will be his; whatever any man gives the priest will be his.'" |
Then the LORD said to Moses, | 11The LORD spoke to Moses: |
"Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'If a man's wife goes astray and is unfaithful to him | 12"Speak to the Israelites and tell them, 'If any man's wife goes astray and behaves unfaithfully toward him, |
so that another man has sexual relations with her, and this is hidden from her husband and her impurity is undetected (since there is no witness against her and she has not been caught in the act), | 13and a man has sexual relations with her without her husband knowing it, and it is hidden that she has defiled herself, since there was no witness against her, nor was she caught-- |
and if feelings of jealousy come over her husband and he suspects his wife and she is impure--or if he is jealous and suspects her even though she is not impure-- | 14and if jealous feelings come over him and he becomes suspicious of his wife, when she is defiled; or if jealous feelings come over him and he becomes suspicious of his wife, when she is not defiled-- |
then he is to take his wife to the priest. He must also take an offering of a tenth of an ephah of barley flour on her behalf. He must not pour olive oil on it or put incense on it, because it is a grain offering for jealousy, a reminder-offering to draw attention to wrongdoing. | 15then the man must bring his wife to the priest, and he must bring the offering required for her, one tenth of an ephah of barley meal; he must not pour olive oil on it or put frankincense on it, because it is a grain offering of suspicion, a grain offering for remembering, for bringing iniquity to remembrance. |
"'The priest shall bring her and have her stand before the LORD. | 16"'Then the priest will bring her near and have her stand before the LORD. |
Then he shall take some holy water in a clay jar and put some dust from the tabernacle floor into the water. | 17The priest will then take holy water in a pottery jar, and take some of the dust that is on the floor of the tabernacle, and put it into the water. |
After the priest has had the woman stand before the LORD, he shall loosen her hair and place in her hands the reminder-offering, the grain offering for jealousy, while he himself holds the bitter water that brings a curse. | 18Then the priest will have the woman stand before the LORD, uncover the woman's head, and put the grain offering for remembering in her hands, which is the grain offering of suspicion. The priest will hold in his hand the bitter water that brings a curse. |
Then the priest shall put the woman under oath and say to her, "If no other man has had sexual relations with you and you have not gone astray and become impure while married to your husband, may this bitter water that brings a curse not harm you. | 19Then the priest will put the woman under oath and say to the her, "If no other man has had sexual relations with you, and if you have not gone astray and become defiled while under your husband's authority, may you be free from this bitter water that brings a curse. |
But if you have gone astray while married to your husband and you have made yourself impure by having sexual relations with a man other than your husband"-- | 20But if you have gone astray while under your husband's authority, and if you have defiled yourself and some man other than your husband has had sexual relations with you. . .." |
here the priest is to put the woman under this curse--"may the LORD cause you to become a curse among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell. | 21Then the priest will put the woman under the oath of the curse and will say to the her, "The LORD make you an attested curse among your people, if the LORD makes your thigh fall away and your abdomen swell; |
May this water that brings a curse enter your body so that your abdomen swells or your womb miscarries." "'Then the woman is to say, "Amen. So be it." | 22and this water that causes the curse will go into your stomach, and make your abdomen swell and your thigh rot." Then the woman must say, "Amen, amen." |
"'The priest is to write these curses on a scroll and then wash them off into the bitter water. | 23"'Then the priest will write these curses on a scroll and then scrape them off into the bitter water. |
He shall make the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and this water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering will enter her. | 24He will make the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and the water that brings a curse will enter her to produce bitterness. |
The priest is to take from her hands the grain offering for jealousy, wave it before the LORD and bring it to the altar. | 25The priest will take the grain offering of suspicion from the woman's hand, wave the grain offering before the LORD, and bring it to the altar. |
The priest is then to take a handful of the grain offering as a memorial offering and burn it on the altar; after that, he is to have the woman drink the water. | 26Then the priest will take a handful of the grain offering as its memorial portion, burn it on the altar, and afterward make the woman drink the water. |
If she has made herself impure and been unfaithful to her husband, this will be the result: When she is made to drink the water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering, it will enter her, her abdomen will swell and her womb will miscarry, and she will become a curse. | 27When he has made her drink the water, then, if she has defiled herself and behaved unfaithfully toward her husband, the water that brings a curse will enter her to produce bitterness--her abdomen will swell, her thigh will fall away, and the woman will become a curse among her people. |
If, however, the woman has not made herself impure, but is clean, she will be cleared of guilt and will be able to have children. | 28But if the woman has not defiled herself, and is clean, then she will be free of ill effects and will be able to bear children. |
"'This, then, is the law of jealousy when a woman goes astray and makes herself impure while married to her husband, | 29"'This is the law for cases of jealousy, when a wife, while under her husband's authority, goes astray and defiles herself, |
or when feelings of jealousy come over a man because he suspects his wife. The priest is to have her stand before the LORD and is to apply this entire law to her. | 30or when jealous feelings come over a man and he becomes suspicious of his wife; then he must have the woman stand before the LORD, and the priest will carry out all this law upon her. |
The husband will be innocent of any wrongdoing, but the woman will bear the consequences of her sin.'" | 31Then the man will be free from iniquity, but that woman will bear the consequences of her iniquity.'" |
