So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, with his wife and everything he had, and Lot went with him.1So Abram went up from Egypt into the Negev. He took his wife and all his possessions with him, as well as Lot.
Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold.2(Now Abram was very wealthy in livestock, silver, and gold.)
From the Negev he went from place to place until he came to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier3And he journeyed from place to place from the Negev as far as Bethel. He returned to the place where he had pitched his tent at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai.
and where he had first built an altar. There Abram called on the name of the LORD.4This was the place where he had first built the altar, and there Abram worshiped the LORD.
Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents.5Now Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had flocks, herds, and tents.
But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together.6But the land could not support them while they were living side by side. Because their possessions were so great, they were not able to live alongside one another.
And quarreling arose between Abram's herders and Lot's. The Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land at that time.7So there were quarrels between Abram's herdsmen and Lot's herdsmen. (Now the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land at that time.)
So Abram said to Lot, "Let's not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives.8Abram said to Lot, "Let there be no quarreling between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are close relatives.
Is not the whole land before you? Let's part company. If you go to the left, I'll go to the right; if you go to the right, I'll go to the left."9Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself now from me. If you go to the left, then I'll go to the right, but if you go to the right, then I'll go to the left."
Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)10Lot looked up and saw the whole region of the Jordan. He noticed that all of it was well-watered (before the LORD obliterated Sodom and Gomorrah) like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, all the way to Zoar.
So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company:11Lot chose for himself the whole region of the Jordan and traveled toward the east. So the relatives separated from each other.
Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom.12Abram settled in the land of Canaan, but Lot settled among the cities of the Jordan plain and pitched his tents next to Sodom.
Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the LORD.13(Now the people of Sodom were extremely wicked rebels against the LORD.)
The LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, "Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west.14After Lot had departed, the LORD said to Abram, "Look from the place where you stand to the north, south, east, and west.
All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever.15I will give all the land that you see to you and your descendants forever.
I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted.16And I will make your descendants like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone is able to count the dust of the earth, then your descendants also can be counted.
Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you."17Get up and walk throughout the land, for I will give it to you."
So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the LORD.18So Abram moved his tents and went to live by the oaks of Mamre in Hebron, and he built an altar to the LORD there.
