New International Version | New American Standard Bible 1995 |
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God--this is your true and proper worship. | 1Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. |
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will. | 2And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. |
For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. | 3For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. |
For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, | 4For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, |
so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. | 5so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. |
We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; | 6Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; |
if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; | 7if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; |
if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. | 8or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. |
Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. | 9Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. |
Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. | 10Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; |
Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. | 11not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; |
Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. | 12rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, |
Share with the Lord's people who are in need. Practice hospitality. | 13contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality. |
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. | 14Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. |
Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. | 15Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. |
Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. | 16Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. |
Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. | 17Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. |
If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. | 18If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. |
Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord. | 19Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord. |
On the contrary: "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head." | 20"BUT IF YOUR ENEMY IS HUNGRY, FEED HIM, AND IF HE IS THIRSTY, GIVE HIM A DRINK; FOR IN SO DOING YOU WILL HEAP BURNING COALS ON HIS HEAD." |
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. | 21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. |
