| 1It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. | 1About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church. |

| 4After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. | 10They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. | 11Then Peter came to himself and said, "Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from Herod's clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen." | 11When Peter came to himself, he said, “Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.” |
| 12When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying. | 12When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose other name was Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying. |
| 13Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door. | 13And when he knocked at the door of the gateway, a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer. |
| 14When she recognized Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, "Peter is at the door!" | 14Recognizing Peter’s voice, in her joy she did not open the gate but ran in and reported that Peter was standing at the gate. |
| 15"You're out of your mind," they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, "It must be his angel." | 15They said to her, “You are out of your mind.” But she kept insisting that it was so, and they kept saying, “It is his angel!” |
| 16But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. | 16But Peter continued knocking, and when they opened, they saw him and were amazed. |
| 17Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. "Tell James and the other brothers and sisters about this," he said, and then he left for another place. | 17But motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, “Tell these things to James and to the brothers.” Then he departed and went to another place. |
| 18In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter. | 18Now when day came, there was no little disturbance among the soldiers over what had become of Peter. |
| 19After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed. Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there. | 19And after Herod searched for him and did not find him, he examined the sentries and ordered that they should be put to death. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea and spent time there. |
| 20He had been quarreling with the people of Tyre and Sidon; they now joined together and sought an audience with him. After securing the support of Blastus, a trusted personal servant of the king, they asked for peace, because they depended on the king's country for their food supply. | 20Now Herod was angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, and they came to him with one accord, and having persuaded Blastus, the king’s chamberlain, they asked for peace, because their country depended on the king’s country for food. |
| 21On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. | 21On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them. |
| 22They shouted, "This is the voice of a god, not of a man." | 22And the people were shouting, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!” |
| 23Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died. | 23Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down, because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last. |
| 24But the word of God continued to spread and flourish. | 24But the word of God increased and multiplied. |
| 25When Barnabas and Saul had finished their mission, they returned from Jerusalem, taking with them John, also called Mark. | 25And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem when they had completed their service, bringing with them John, whose other name was Mark. |
