New International VersionChristian Standard Bible
Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land the LORD promised on oath to your ancestors.1"Carefully follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase, and may enter and take possession of the land the LORD swore to your fathers.
Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.2Remember that the LORD your God led you on the entire journey these forty years in the wilderness, so that he might humble you and test you to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.
He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.3He humbled you by letting you go hungry; then he gave you manna to eat, which you and your fathers had not known, so that you might learn that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.4Your clothing did not wear out, and your feet did not swell these forty years.
Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you.5Keep in mind that the LORD your God has been disciplining you just as a man disciplines his son.
Observe the commands of the LORD your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him.6So keep the commands of the LORD your God by walking in his ways and fearing him.
For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land--a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills;7For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land with streams, springs, and deep water sources, flowing in both valleys and hills;
a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey;8a land of wheat, barley, vines, figs, and pomegranates; a land of olive oil and honey;
a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.9a land where you will eat food without shortage, where you will lack nothing; a land whose rocks are iron and from whose hills you will mine copper.
When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you.10When you eat and are full, you will bless the LORD your God for the good land he has given you.
Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day.11"Be careful that you don't forget the LORD your God by failing to keep his commands, ordinances, and statutes that I am giving you today.
Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down,12When you eat and are full, and build beautiful houses to live in,
and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied,13and your herds and flocks grow large, and your silver and gold multiply, and everything else you have increases,
then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.14be careful that your heart doesn't become proud and you forget the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.
He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock.15He led you through the great and terrible wilderness with its poisonous snakes and scorpions, a thirsty land where there was no water. He brought water out of the flint rock for you.
He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you.16He fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers had not known, in order to humble and test you, so that in the end he might cause you to prosper.
You may say to yourself, "My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me."17You may say to yourself, 'My power and my own ability have gained this wealth for me,'
But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.18but remember that the LORD your God gives you the power to gain wealth, in order to confirm his covenant he swore to your fathers, as it is today.
If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.19If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods to serve them and bow in worship to them, I testify against you today that you will perish.
Like the nations the LORD destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the LORD your God.20Like the nations the LORD is about to destroy before you, you will perish if you do not obey the LORD your God.
