The oracle against Nineveh; the book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite: 1This message concerning Nineveh came as a vision to Nahum, who lived in Elkosh. The LORD’s Anger against Nineveh
The LORD is a zealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging and very angry. The LORD takes vengeance against his foes; he sustains his rage against his enemies. 2The LORD is a jealous God, filled with vengeance and rage. He takes revenge on all who oppose him and continues to rage against his enemies!
The LORD is slow to anger but great in power; the LORD will certainly not allow the wicked to go unpunished. The Divine Warrior Destroys His Enemies but Protects His People He marches out in the whirlwind and the raging storm; dark storm clouds billow like dust under his feet. 3The LORD is slow to get angry, but his power is great, and he never lets the guilty go unpunished. He displays his power in the whirlwind and the storm. The billowing clouds are the dust beneath his feet.
He shouts a battle cry against the sea and makes it dry up; he makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel wither; the blossom of Lebanon withers. 4At his command the oceans dry up, and the rivers disappear. The lush pastures of Bashan and Carmel fade, and the green forests of Lebanon wither.
The mountains tremble before him, the hills convulse; the earth is laid waste before him, the world and all its inhabitants are laid waste. 5In his presence the mountains quake, and the hills melt away; the earth trembles, and its people are destroyed.
No one can withstand his indignation! No one can resist his fierce anger! His wrath is poured out like volcanic fire, boulders are broken up as he approaches. 6Who can stand before his fierce anger? Who can survive his burning fury? His rage blazes forth like fire, and the mountains crumble to dust in his presence.
The LORD is good--indeed, he is a fortress in time of distress, and he protects those who seek refuge in him. 7The LORD is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes. He is close to those who trust in him.
But with an overwhelming flood he will make a complete end of Nineveh; he will drive his enemies into darkness. 8But he will sweep away his enemies in an overwhelming flood. He will pursue his foes into the darkness of night.
Whatever you plot against the LORD, he will completely destroy! Distress will not arise a second time. 9Why are you scheming against the LORD? He will destroy you with one blow; he won’t need to strike twice!
Surely they will be totally consumed like entangled thorn bushes, like the drink of drunkards, like very dry stubble. 10His enemies, tangled like thornbushes and staggering like drunks, will be burned up like dry stubble in a field.
From you, O Nineveh, one has marched forth who plots evil against the LORD, a wicked military strategist. 11Who is this wicked counselor of yours who plots evil against the LORD?
This is what the LORD says: "Even though they are powerful--and what is more, even though their army is numerous--nevertheless, they will be destroyed and trickle away! Although I afflicted you, I will afflict you no more. 12This is what the LORD says: “Though the Assyrians have many allies, they will be destroyed and disappear. O my people, I have punished you before, but I will not punish you again.
And now, I will break Assyria's yoke bar from your neck; I will tear apart the shackles that are on you." 13Now I will break the yoke of bondage from your neck and tear off the chains of Assyrian oppression.”
The LORD has issued a decree against you: "Your dynasty will come to an end. I will destroy the idols and images in the temples of your gods. I will desecrate your grave--because you are accursed!" 14And this is what the LORD says concerning the Assyrians in Nineveh: “You will have no more children to carry on your name. I will destroy all the idols in the temples of your gods. I am preparing a grave for you because you are despicable!”
Look! A herald is running on the mountains! A messenger is proclaiming deliverance: "Celebrate your sacred festivals, O Judah! Fulfill your sacred vows to praise God! For never again will the wicked Assyrians invade you, they have been completely destroyed." 15 Look! A messenger is coming over the mountains with good news! He is bringing a message of peace. Celebrate your festivals, O people of Judah, and fulfill all your vows, for your wicked enemies will never invade your land again. They will be completely destroyed!
