The oracle against Nineveh; the book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite: | 1A pronouncement about Nineveh: The record of the vision of Nahum from Elkosh. |
The LORD is a zealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging and very angry. The LORD takes vengeance against his foes; he sustains his rage against his enemies. | 2A jealous God, the LORD avenges. The LORD avenges; The Lord is an angry husband. The LORD takes vengeance on his enemies, reserving anger for his adversaries. |
The LORD is slow to anger but great in power; the LORD will certainly not allow the wicked to go unpunished. The Divine Warrior Destroys His Enemies but Protects His People He marches out in the whirlwind and the raging storm; dark storm clouds billow like dust under his feet. | 3The LORD is slow to anger and powerful, and he will never let the guilty go unpunished. The LORD's path is in the windstorm and hurricane; thunderclouds are dust beneath his feet. |
He shouts a battle cry against the sea and makes it dry up; he makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel wither; the blossom of Lebanon withers. | 4He rebukes the sea, and it evaporates; he dries up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel wither, while the flowers of Lebanon languish. |
The mountains tremble before him, the hills convulse; the earth is laid waste before him, the world and all its inhabitants are laid waste. | 5Mountains shake because of him, and the hills melt. The earth goes into upheaval at his presence, as does the world with all of its inhabitants. |
No one can withstand his indignation! No one can resist his fierce anger! His wrath is poured out like volcanic fire, boulders are broken up as he approaches. | 6Who can stand before his fury? And who can endure his fierce anger? His displeasure pours out like fire, and rocks are broken to pieces because of him. |
The LORD is good--indeed, he is a fortress in time of distress, and he protects those who seek refuge in him. | 7The LORD is good— a refuge in troubled times. He knows those who are confiding in him. |
But with an overwhelming flood he will make a complete end of Nineveh; he will drive his enemies into darkness. | 8But with an overwhelming deluge he will bring utter desolation to Nineveh, and his enemies he will pursue with darkness. |
Whatever you plot against the LORD, he will completely destroy! Distress will not arise a second time. | 9What are you scheming against the LORD? He will bring about utter desolation— adversity will not strike twice! |
Surely they will be totally consumed like entangled thorn bushes, like the drink of drunkards, like very dry stubble. | 10Indeed, while tangled as by a thorn bush, while drunken as by a strong drink, the Ninevites will be burned like dry straw. |
From you, O Nineveh, one has marched forth who plots evil against the LORD, a wicked military strategist. | 11Someone has left you who plans evil against the LORD. He is a demonic counselor. |
This is what the LORD says: "Even though they are powerful--and what is more, even though their army is numerous--nevertheless, they will be destroyed and trickle away! Although I afflicted you, I will afflict you no more. | 12This is what the LORD says: "No matter how strong they are, and no matter how numerous, they will surely be annihilated and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will do so no more. |
And now, I will break Assyria's yoke bar from your neck; I will tear apart the shackles that are on you." | 13Now I will break off Assyria's yoke from you, and tear apart your shackles." |
The LORD has issued a decree against you: "Your dynasty will come to an end. I will destroy the idols and images in the temples of your gods. I will desecrate your grave--because you are accursed!" | 14Now this is what the Lord has decreed about you, Nineveh: "There will be no more children born to carry on your name. I will cut out the graven and molten images from the temples of your gods. I myself will dig your grave, because you are vile." |
Look! A herald is running on the mountains! A messenger is proclaiming deliverance: "Celebrate your sacred festivals, O Judah! Fulfill your sacred vows to praise God! For never again will the wicked Assyrians invade you, they have been completely destroyed." | 15 Look! There on the mountains! The feet of the one who brings good news, who broadcasts a message of peace. Judah, celebrate your solemn festivals and keep your vows, because the wicked will never again invade you. Nineveh will be completely eliminated! |
