Now on the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, | 1On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; |
and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. | 2and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. |
When the wine ran out, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no wine left." | 3When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine." |
Jesus replied, "Woman, why are you saying this to me? My time has not yet come." | 4And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come." |
His mother told the servants, "Whatever he tells you, do it." | 5His mother said to the servants, "Whatever He says to you, do it." |
Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washing, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. | 6Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each. |
Jesus told the servants, "Fill the water jars with water." So they filled them up to the very top. | 7Jesus said to them, "Fill the waterpots with water." So they filled them up to the brim. |
Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the head steward," and they did. | 8And He said to them, "Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter." So they took it to him. |
When the head steward tasted the water that had been turned to wine, not knowing where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), he called the bridegroom | 9When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom, |
and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the cheaper wine when the guests are drunk. You have kept the good wine until now!" | 10and said to him, "Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now." |
Jesus did this as the first of his miraculous signs, in Cana of Galilee. In this way he revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him. | 11This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him. |
After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there a few days. | 12After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother and His brothers and His disciples; and they stayed there a few days. |
Now the Jewish feast of Passover was near, so Jesus went up to Jerusalem. | 13The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. |
He found in the temple courts those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers sitting at tables. | 14And He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. |
So he made a whip of cords and drove them all out of the temple courts, with the sheep and the oxen. He scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. | 15And He made a scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables; |
To those who sold the doves he said, "Take these things away from here! Do not make my Father's house a marketplace!" | 16and to those who were selling the doves He said, "Take these things away; stop making My Father's house a place of business." |
His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for your house will devour me." | 17His disciples remembered that it was written, "ZEAL FOR YOUR HOUSE WILL CONSUME ME." |
So then the Jewish leaders responded, "What sign can you show us, since you are doing these things?" | 18The Jews then said to Him, "What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?" |
Jesus replied, "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up again." | 19Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." |
Then the Jewish leaders said to him, "This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and are you going to raise it up in three days?" | 20The Jews then said, "It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?" |
But Jesus was speaking about the temple of his body. | 21But He was speaking of the temple of His body. |
So after he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the scripture and the saying that Jesus had spoken. | 22So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken. |
Now while Jesus was in Jerusalem at the feast of the Passover, many people believed in his name because they saw the miraculous signs he was doing. | 23Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, observing His signs which He was doing. |
But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people. | 24But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men, |
He did not need anyone to testify about man, for he knew what was in man. | 25and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man. |
