1When you see your neighbor's ox or sheep going astray, do not ignore it; you must return it without fail to your neighbor.

1"You shall not see your countryman's ox or his sheep straying away, and pay no attention to them; you shall certainly bring them back to your countryman.

2If the owner does not live near you or you do not know who the owner is, then you must corral the animal at your house and let it stay with you until the owner looks for it; then you must return it to him.

2"If your countryman is not near you, or if you do not know him, then you shall bring it home to your house, and it shall remain with you until your countryman looks for it; then you shall restore it to him.

3You shall do the same to his donkey, his clothes, or anything else your neighbor has lost and you have found; you must not refuse to get involved.

3"Thus you shall do with his donkey, and you shall do the same with his garment, and you shall do likewise with anything lost by your countryman, which he has lost and you have found. You are not allowed to neglect them.

4When you see your neighbor's donkey or ox fallen along the road, do not ignore it; instead, you must be sure to help him get the animal on its feet again.

4"You shall not see your countryman's donkey or his ox fallen down on the way, and pay no attention to them; you shall certainly help him to raise them up.

5A woman must not wear men's clothing, nor should a man dress up in women's clothing, for anyone who does this is offensive to the LORD your God.

5"A woman shall not wear man's clothing, nor shall a man put on a woman's clothing; for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD your God.

6If you happen to notice a bird's nest along the road, whether in a tree or on the ground, and there are chicks or eggs with the mother bird sitting on them, you must not take the mother from the young.

6"If you happen to come upon a bird's nest along the way, in any tree or on the ground, with young ones or eggs, and the mother sitting on the young or on the eggs, you shall not take the mother with the young;

7You must be sure to let the mother go, but you may take the young for yourself. Do this so that it may go well with you and you may have a long life.

7you shall certainly let the mother go, but the young you may take for yourself, in order that it may be well with you and that you may prolong your days.

8If you build a new house, you must construct a guard rail around your roof to avoid being culpable in the event someone should fall from it.

8"When you build a new house, you shall make a parapet for your roof, so that you will not bring bloodguilt on your house if anyone falls from it.

9You must not plant your vineyard with two kinds of seed; otherwise the entire yield, both of the seed you plant and the produce of the vineyard, will be defiled.

9"You shall not sow your vineyard with two kinds of seed, or all the produce of the seed which you have sown and the increase of the vineyard will become defiled.

10You must not plow with an ox and a donkey harnessed together.

10"You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together.

11You must not wear clothing made with wool and linen meshed together.

11"You shall not wear a material mixed of wool and linen together.

12You shall make yourselves tassels for the four corners of the clothing you wear.

12"You shall make yourself tassels on the four corners of your garment with which you cover yourself.

13Suppose a man marries a woman, has sexual relations with her, and then rejects her,

13"If any man takes a wife and goes in to her and then turns against her,

14accusing her of impropriety and defaming her reputation by saying, "I married this woman but when I had sexual relations with her I discovered she was not a virgin!"

14and charges her with shameful deeds and publicly defames her, and says, 'I took this woman, but when I came near her, I did not find her a virgin,'

15Then the father and mother of the young woman must produce the evidence of virginity for the elders of the city at the gate.

15then the girl's father and her mother shall take and bring out the evidence of the girl's virginity to the elders of the city at the gate.

16The young woman's father must say to the elders, "I gave my daughter to this man and he has rejected her.

16"The girl's father shall say to the elders, 'I gave my daughter to this man for a wife, but he turned against her;

17Moreover, he has raised accusations of impropriety by saying, 'I discovered your daughter was not a virgin,' but this is the evidence of my daughter's virginity!" The cloth must then be spread out before the city's elders.

17and behold, he has charged her with shameful deeds, saying, "I did not find your daughter a virgin." But this is the evidence of my daughter's virginity.' And they shall spread the garment before the elders of the city.

18The elders of that city must then seize the man and punish him.

18"So the elders of that city shall take the man and chastise him,

19They will fine him one hundred shekels of silver and give them to the young woman's father, for the man who made the accusation ruined the reputation of an Israelite virgin. She will then become his wife and he may never divorce her as long as he lives.

19and they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver and give it to the girl's father, because he publicly defamed a virgin of Israel. And she shall remain his wife; he cannot divorce her all his days.

20But if the accusation is true and the young woman was not a virgin,

20"But if this charge is true, that the girl was not found a virgin,

21the men of her city must bring the young woman to the door of her father's house and stone her to death, for she has done a disgraceful thing in Israel by behaving like a prostitute while living in her father's house. In this way you will purge evil from among you.

21then they shall bring out the girl to the doorway of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death because she has committed an act of folly in Israel by playing the harlot in her father's house; thus you shall purge the evil from among you.

22If a man is caught having sexual relations with a married woman both the man who had relations with the woman and the woman herself must die; in this way you will purge evil from Israel.

22"If a man is found lying with a married woman, then both of them shall die, the man who lay with the woman, and the woman; thus you shall purge the evil from Israel.

23If a virgin is engaged to a man and another man meets her in the city and has sexual relations with her,

23"If there is a girl who is a virgin engaged to a man, and another man finds her in the city and lies with her,

24you must bring the two of them to the gate of that city and stone them to death, the young woman because she did not cry out though in the city and the man because he violated his neighbor's fiancee; in this way you will purge evil from among you.

24then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city and you shall stone them to death; the girl, because she did not cry out in the city, and the man, because he has violated his neighbor's wife. Thus you shall purge the evil from among you.

25But if the man came across the engaged woman in the field and overpowered her and raped her, then only the rapist must die.

25"But if in the field the man finds the girl who is engaged, and the man forces her and lies with her, then only the man who lies with her shall die.

26You must not do anything to the young woman--she has done nothing deserving of death. This case is the same as when someone attacks another person and murders him,

26"But you shall do nothing to the girl; there is no sin in the girl worthy of death, for just as a man rises against his neighbor and murders him, so is this case.

27for the man met her in the field and the engaged woman cried out, but there was no one to rescue her.

27"When he found her in the field, the engaged girl cried out, but there was no one to save her.

28Suppose a man comes across a virgin who is not engaged and overpowers and rapes her and they are discovered.

28"If a man finds a girl who is a virgin, who is not engaged, and seizes her and lies with her and they are discovered,

29The man who has raped her must pay her father fifty shekels of silver and she must become his wife because he has violated her; he may never divorce her as long as he lives.

29then the man who lay with her shall give to the girl's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall become his wife because he has violated her; he cannot divorce her all his days.

30A man may not marry his father's former wife and in this way dishonor his father.

30"A man shall not take his father's wife so that he will not uncover his father's skirt.
