| 1When you see your neighbor's ox or sheep going astray, do not ignore it; you must return it without fail to your neighbor. | 1“You shall not see your brother’s ox or his sheep going astray and ignore them. You shall take them back to your brother. |
| 2If the owner does not live near you or you do not know who the owner is, then you must corral the animal at your house and let it stay with you until the owner looks for it; then you must return it to him. | 2And if he does not live near you and you do not know who he is, you shall bring it home to your house, and it shall stay with you until your brother seeks it. Then you shall restore it to him. |
| 3You shall do the same to his donkey, his clothes, or anything else your neighbor has lost and you have found; you must not refuse to get involved. | 3And you shall do the same with his donkey or with his garment, or with any lost thing of your brother’s, which he loses and you find; you may not ignore it. |
| 4When you see your neighbor's donkey or ox fallen along the road, do not ignore it; instead, you must be sure to help him get the animal on its feet again. | 4You shall not see your brother’s donkey or his ox fallen down by the way and ignore them. You shall help him to lift them up again. |
| 5A woman must not wear men's clothing, nor should a man dress up in women's clothing, for anyone who does this is offensive to the LORD your God. | 5“A woman shall not wear a man’s garment, nor shall a man put on a woman’s cloak, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD your God. |
| 6If you happen to notice a bird's nest along the road, whether in a tree or on the ground, and there are chicks or eggs with the mother bird sitting on them, you must not take the mother from the young. | 6“If you come across a bird’s nest in any tree or on the ground, with young ones or eggs and the mother sitting on the young or on the eggs, you shall not take the mother with the young. |
| 7You must be sure to let the mother go, but you may take the young for yourself. Do this so that it may go well with you and you may have a long life. | 7You shall let the mother go, but the young you may take for yourself, that it may go well with you, and that you may live long. |
| 8If you build a new house, you must construct a guard rail around your roof to avoid being culpable in the event someone should fall from it. | 8“When you build a new house, you shall make a parapet for your roof, that you may not bring the guilt of blood upon your house, if anyone should fall from it. |
| 9You must not plant your vineyard with two kinds of seed; otherwise the entire yield, both of the seed you plant and the produce of the vineyard, will be defiled. | 9“You shall not sow your vineyard with two kinds of seed, lest the whole yield be forfeited, the crop that you have sown and the yield of the vineyard. |
| 10You must not plow with an ox and a donkey harnessed together. | 10You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together. |
| 11You must not wear clothing made with wool and linen meshed together. | 11You shall not wear cloth of wool and linen mixed together. |
| 12You shall make yourselves tassels for the four corners of the clothing you wear. | 12“You shall make yourself tassels on the four corners of the garment with which you cover yourself. |
| 13Suppose a man marries a woman, has sexual relations with her, and then rejects her, | 13“If any man takes a wife and goes in to her and then hates her |
| 14accusing her of impropriety and defaming her reputation by saying, "I married this woman but when I had sexual relations with her I discovered she was not a virgin!" | 14and accuses her of misconduct and brings a bad name upon her, saying, ‘I took this woman, and when I came near her, I did not find in her evidence of virginity,’ |
| 15Then the father and mother of the young woman must produce the evidence of virginity for the elders of the city at the gate. | 15then the father of the young woman and her mother shall take and bring out the evidence of her virginity to the elders of the city in the gate. |
| 16The young woman's father must say to the elders, "I gave my daughter to this man and he has rejected her. | 16And the father of the young woman shall say to the elders, ‘I gave my daughter to this man to marry, and he hates her; |
| 17Moreover, he has raised accusations of impropriety by saying, 'I discovered your daughter was not a virgin,' but this is the evidence of my daughter's virginity!" The cloth must then be spread out before the city's elders. | 17and behold, he has accused her of misconduct, saying, “I did not find in your daughter evidence of virginity.” And yet this is the evidence of my daughter’s virginity.’ And they shall spread the cloak before the elders of the city. |
| 18The elders of that city must then seize the man and punish him. | 18Then the elders of that city shall take the man and whip him, |
| 19They will fine him one hundred shekels of silver and give them to the young woman's father, for the man who made the accusation ruined the reputation of an Israelite virgin. She will then become his wife and he may never divorce her as long as he lives. | 19and they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver and give them to the father of the young woman, because he has brought a bad name upon a virgin of Israel. And she shall be his wife. He may not divorce her all his days. |
| 20But if the accusation is true and the young woman was not a virgin, | 20But if the thing is true, that evidence of virginity was not found in the young woman, |
| 21the men of her city must bring the young woman to the door of her father's house and stone her to death, for she has done a disgraceful thing in Israel by behaving like a prostitute while living in her father's house. In this way you will purge evil from among you. | 21then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she has done an outrageous thing in Israel by whoring in her father’s house. So you shall purge the evil from your midst. |
| 22If a man is caught having sexual relations with a married woman both the man who had relations with the woman and the woman herself must die; in this way you will purge evil from Israel. | 22“If a man is found lying with the wife of another man, both of them shall die, the man who lay with the woman, and the woman. So you shall purge the evil from Israel. |
| 23If a virgin is engaged to a man and another man meets her in the city and has sexual relations with her, | 23“If there is a betrothed virgin, and a man meets her in the city and lies with her, |
| 24you must bring the two of them to the gate of that city and stone them to death, the young woman because she did not cry out though in the city and the man because he violated his neighbor's fiancee; in this way you will purge evil from among you. | 24then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones, the young woman because she did not cry for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbor’s wife. So you shall purge the evil from your midst. |
| 25But if the man came across the engaged woman in the field and overpowered her and raped her, then only the rapist must die. | 25“But if in the open country a man meets a young woman who is betrothed, and the man seizes her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die. |
| 26You must not do anything to the young woman--she has done nothing deserving of death. This case is the same as when someone attacks another person and murders him, | 26But you shall do nothing to the young woman; she has committed no offense punishable by death. For this case is like that of a man attacking and murdering his neighbor, |
| 27for the man met her in the field and the engaged woman cried out, but there was no one to rescue her. | 27because he met her in the open country, and though the betrothed young woman cried for help there was no one to rescue her. |
| 28Suppose a man comes across a virgin who is not engaged and overpowers and rapes her and they are discovered. | 28“If a man meets a virgin who is not betrothed, and seizes her and lies with her, and they are found, |
| 29The man who has raped her must pay her father fifty shekels of silver and she must become his wife because he has violated her; he may never divorce her as long as he lives. | 29then the man who lay with her shall give to the father of the young woman fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife, because he has violated her. He may not divorce her all his days. |
| 30A man may not marry his father's former wife and in this way dishonor his father. | 30“A man shall not take his father’s wife, so that he does not uncover his father’s nakedness. |
