But understand this, that in the last days difficult times will come. | 1But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. |
For people will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, | 2For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, |
unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, savage, opposed to what is good, | 3unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, |
treacherous, reckless, conceited, loving pleasure rather than loving God. | 4treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, |
They will maintain the outward appearance of religion but will have repudiated its power. So avoid people like these. | 5holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these. |
For some of these insinuate themselves into households and captivate weak women who are overwhelmed with sins and led along by various passions. | 6For among them are those who enter into households and captivate weak women weighed down with sins, led on by various impulses, |
Such women are always seeking instruction, yet never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. | 7always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. |
And just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these people--who have warped minds and are disqualified in the faith--also oppose the truth. | 8Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men of depraved mind, rejected in regard to the faith. |
But they will not go much further, for their foolishness will be obvious to everyone, just like it was with Jannes and Jambres. | 9But they will not make further progress; for their folly will be obvious to all, just as Jannes's and Jambres's folly was also. |
You, however, have followed my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, my faith, my patience, my love, my endurance, | 10Now you followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, perseverance, |
as well as the persecutions and sufferings that happened to me in Antioch, in Iconium, and in Lystra. I endured these persecutions and the Lord delivered me from them all. | 11persecutions, and sufferings, such as happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium and at Lystra; what persecutions I endured, and out of them all the Lord rescued me! |
Now in fact all who want to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. | 12Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. |
But evil people and charlatans will go from bad to worse, deceiving others and being deceived themselves. | 13But evil men and impostors will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. |
You, however, must continue in the things you have learned and are confident about. You know who taught you | 14You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, |
and how from infancy you have known the holy writings, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. | 15and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. |
Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, | 16All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; |
that the person dedicated to God may be capable and equipped for every good work. | 17so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. |
