When David had settled into his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, "Look, I am living in a palace made from cedar, while the ark of the LORD's covenant is under a tent." | 1And it came about, when David dwelt in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, "Behold, I am dwelling in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD is under curtains." |
Nathan said to David, "You should do whatever you have in mind, for God is with you." | 2Then Nathan said to David, "Do all that is in your heart, for God is with you." |
That night God told Nathan the prophet, | 3It came about the same night that the word of God came to Nathan, saying, |
"Go, tell my servant David: 'This is what the LORD says: "You must not build me a house in which to live. | 4"Go and tell David My servant, 'Thus says the LORD, "You shall not build a house for Me to dwell in; |
For I have not lived in a house from the time I brought Israel up from Egypt to the present day. I have lived in a tent that has been in various places. | 5for I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up Israel to this day, but I have gone from tent to tent and from one dwelling place to another. |
Wherever I moved throughout Israel, I did not say to any of the leaders whom I appointed to care for my people Israel, 'Why have you not built me a house made from cedar?'"' | 6"In all places where I have walked with all Israel, have I spoken a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My people, saying, 'Why have you not built for Me a house of cedar?'"' |
"So now, say this to my servant David: 'This is what the LORD who commands armies says: "I took you from the pasture and from your work as a shepherd to make you a leader of my people Israel. | 7"Now, therefore, thus shall you say to My servant David, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts, "I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be leader over My people Israel. |
I was with you wherever you went and I defeated all your enemies before you. Now I will make you as famous as the great men of the earth. | 8"I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make you a name like the name of the great ones who are in the earth. |
I will establish a place for my people Israel and settle them there; they will live there and not be disturbed anymore. Violent men will not oppress them again, as they did in the beginning | 9"I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and not be moved again; and the wicked will not waste them anymore as formerly, |
and during the time when I appointed judges to lead my people Israel. I will subdue all your enemies. "'"I declare to you that the LORD will build a dynastic house for you! | 10even from the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel. And I will subdue all your enemies. Moreover, I tell you that the LORD will build a house for you. |
When the time comes for you to die, I will raise up your descendant, one of your own sons, to succeed you, and I will establish his kingdom. | 11"When your days are fulfilled that you must go to be with your fathers, that I will set up one of your descendants after you, who will be of your sons; and I will establish his kingdom. |
He will build me a house, and I will make his dynasty permanent. | 12"He shall build for Me a house, and I will establish his throne forever. |
I will become his father and he will become my son. I will never withhold my loyal love from him, as I withheld it from the one who ruled before you. | 13"I will be his father and he shall be My son; and I will not take My lovingkindness away from him, as I took it from him who was before you. |
I will put him in permanent charge of my house and my kingdom; his dynasty will be permanent."'" | 14"But I will settle him in My house and in My kingdom forever, and his throne shall be established forever."'" |
Nathan told David all these words that were revealed to him. | 15According to all these words and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David. |
David went in, sat before the LORD, and said: "Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my family, that you should have brought me to this point? | 16Then David the king went in and sat before the LORD and said, "Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my house that You have brought me this far? |
And you did not stop there, O God! You have also spoken about the future of your servant's family. You have revealed to me what men long to know, O LORD God. | 17"This was a small thing in Your eyes, O God; but You have spoken of Your servant's house for a great while to come, and have regarded me according to the standard of a man of high degree, O LORD God. |
What more can David say to you? You have honored your servant; you have given your servant special recognition. | 18"What more can David still say to You concerning the honor bestowed on Your servant? For You know Your servant. |
O LORD, for the sake of your servant and according to your will, you have done this great thing in order to reveal your greatness. | 19"O LORD, for Your servant's sake, and according to Your own heart, You have wrought all this greatness, to make known all these great things. |
O LORD, there is none like you; there is no God besides you! What we heard is true! | 20"O LORD, there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears. |
And who is like your people, Israel, a unique nation in the earth? Their God went to claim a nation for himself! You made a name for yourself by doing great and awesome deeds when you drove out nations before your people whom you had delivered from the Egyptian empire and its gods. | 21"And what one nation in the earth is like Your people Israel, whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people, to make You a name by great and terrible things, in driving out nations from before Your people, whom You redeemed out of Egypt? |
You made Israel your very own nation for all time. You, O LORD, became their God. | 22"For Your people Israel You made Your own people forever, and You, O LORD, became their God. |
So now, O LORD, may the promise you made about your servant and his family become a permanent reality! Do as you promised, | 23"Now, O LORD, let the word that You have spoken concerning Your servant and concerning his house be established forever, and do as You have spoken. |
so it may become a reality and you may gain lasting fame, as people say, 'The LORD who commands armies is the God of Israel.' David's dynasty will be established before you, | 24"Let Your name be established and magnified forever, saying, 'The LORD of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel; and the house of David Your servant is established before You.' |
for you, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a dynasty for him. That is why your servant has had the courage to pray to you. | 25"For You, O my God, have revealed to Your servant that You will build for him a house; therefore Your servant has found courage to pray before You. |
Now, O LORD, you are the true God; you have made this good promise to your servant. | 26"Now, O LORD, You are God, and have promised this good thing to Your servant. |
Now you are willing to bless your servant's dynasty so that it may stand permanently before you, for you, O LORD, have blessed it and it will be blessed from now on into the future." | 27"And now it has pleased You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue forever before You; for You, O LORD, have blessed, and it is blessed forever." |
