The LORD visited Sarah just as he had said he would and did for Sarah what he had promised. | 1The LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did to Sarah as he had promised. |
So Sarah became pregnant and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the appointed time that God had told him. | 2And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God had spoken to him. |
Abraham named his son--whom Sarah bore to him--Isaac. | 3Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore him, Isaac. |
When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him just as God had commanded him to do. | 4And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him. |
(Now Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.) | 5Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. |
Sarah said, "God has made me laugh. Everyone who hears about this will laugh with me." | 6And Sarah said, “God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh over me.” |
She went on to say, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have given birth to a son for him in his old age!" | 7And she said, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.” |
The child grew and was weaned. Abraham prepared a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. | 8And the child grew and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. |
But Sarah noticed the son of Hagar the Egyptian--the son whom Hagar had borne to Abraham--mocking. | 9But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, laughing. |
So she said to Abraham, "Banish that slave woman and her son, for the son of that slave woman will not be an heir along with my son Isaac!" | 10So she said to Abraham, “Cast out this slave woman with her son, for the son of this slave woman shall not be heir with my son Isaac.” |
Sarah's demand displeased Abraham greatly because Ishmael was his son. | 11And the thing was very displeasing to Abraham on account of his son. |
But God said to Abraham, "Do not be upset about the boy or your slave wife. Do all that Sarah is telling you because through Isaac your descendants will be counted. | 12But God said to Abraham, “Be not displeased because of the boy and because of your slave woman. Whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for through Isaac shall your offspring be named. |
But I will also make the son of the slave wife into a great nation, for he is your descendant too." | 13And I will make a nation of the son of the slave woman also, because he is your offspring.” |
Early in the morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He put them on her shoulders, gave her the child, and sent her away. So she went wandering aimlessly through the wilderness of Beer Sheba. | 14So Abraham rose early in the morning and took bread and a skin of water and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, along with the child, and sent her away. And she departed and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. |
When the water in the skin was gone, she shoved the child under one of the shrubs. | 15When the water in the skin was gone, she put the child under one of the bushes. |
Then she went and sat down by herself across from him at quite a distance, about a bowshot away; for she thought, "I refuse to watch the child die." So she sat across from him and wept uncontrollably. | 16Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot, for she said, “Let me not look on the death of the child.” And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept. |
But God heard the boy's voice. The angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and asked her, "What is the matter, Hagar? Don't be afraid, for God has heard the boy's voice right where he is crying. | 17And God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. |
Get up! Help the boy up and hold him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation." | 18Up! Lift up the boy, and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make him into a great nation.” |
Then God enabled Hagar to see a well of water. She went over and filled the skin with water, and then gave the boy a drink. | 19Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink. |
God was with the boy as he grew. He lived in the wilderness and became an archer. | 20And God was with the boy, and he grew up. He lived in the wilderness and became an expert with the bow. |
He lived in the wilderness of Paran. His mother found a wife for him from the land of Egypt. | 21He lived in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt. |
At that time Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, said to Abraham, "God is with you in all that you do. | 22At that time Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army said to Abraham, “God is with you in all that you do. |
Now swear to me right here in God's name that you will not deceive me, my children, or my descendants. Show me, and the land where you are staying, the same loyalty that I have shown you." | 23Now therefore swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me or with my descendants or with my posterity, but as I have dealt kindly with you, so you will deal with me and with the land where you have sojourned.” |
Abraham said, "I swear to do this." | 24And Abraham said, “I will swear.” |
But Abraham lodged a complaint against Abimelech concerning a well that Abimelech's servants had seized. | 25When Abraham reproved Abimelech about a well of water that Abimelech’s servants had seized, |
"I do not know who has done this thing," Abimelech replied. "Moreover, you did not tell me. I did not hear about it until today." | 26Abimelech said, “I do not know who has done this thing; you did not tell me, and I have not heard of it until today.” |
Abraham took some sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelech. The two of them made a treaty. | 27So Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech, and the two men made a covenant. |
Then Abraham set seven ewe lambs apart from the flock by themselves. | 28Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock apart. |
Abimelech asked Abraham, "What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs that you have set apart?" | 29And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs that you have set apart?” |
He replied, "You must take these seven ewe lambs from my hand as legal proof that I dug this well." | 30He said, “These seven ewe lambs you will take from my hand, that this may be a witness for me that I dug this well.” |
That is why he named that place Beer Sheba, because the two of them swore an oath there. | 31Therefore that place was called Beersheba, because there both of them swore an oath. |
So they made a treaty at Beer Sheba. Then Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, returned to the land of the Philistines. | 32So they made a covenant at Beersheba. Then Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army rose up and returned to the land of the Philistines. |
Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beer Sheba. There he worshiped the LORD, the eternal God. | 33Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba and called there on the name of the LORD, the Everlasting God. |
So Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines for quite some time. | 34And Abraham sojourned many days in the land of the Philistines. |
