NET BibleEnglish Standard Version
Some time after these things God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am!" Abraham replied.1After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
God said, "Take your son--your only son, whom you love, Isaac--and go to the land of Moriah! Offer him up there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I will indicate to you." 2He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”
Early in the morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took two of his young servants with him, along with his son Isaac. When he had cut the wood for the burnt offering, he started out for the place God had spoken to him about. 3So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
On the third day Abraham caught sight of the place in the distance.4On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar.
So he said to his servants, "You two stay here with the donkey while the boy and I go up there. We will worship and then return to you." 5Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.”
Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and put it on his son Isaac. Then he took the fire and the knife in his hand, and the two of them walked on together.6And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together.
Isaac said to his father Abraham, "My father?" "What is it, my son?" he replied. "Here is the fire and the wood," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?"7And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”
"God will provide for himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son," Abraham replied. The two of them continued on together. 8Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together.
When they came to the place God had told him about, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood on it. Next he tied up his son Isaac and placed him on the altar on top of the wood.9When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.
Then Abraham reached out his hand, took the knife, and prepared to slaughter his son.10Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.
But the LORD's angel called to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Here I am!" he answered.11But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
"Do not harm the boy!" the angel said. "Do not do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God because you did not withhold your son, your only son, from me." 12He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”
Abraham looked up and saw behind him a ram caught in the bushes by its horns. So he went over and got the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.13And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.
And Abraham called the name of that place "The LORD provides." It is said to this day, "In the mountain of the LORD provision will be made." 14So Abraham called the name of that place, “The LORD will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided.”
The LORD's angel called to Abraham a second time from heaven15And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven
and said, "'I solemnly swear by my own name,' decrees the LORD, 'that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,16and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,
I will indeed bless you, and I will greatly multiply your descendants so that they will be as countless as the stars in the sky or the grains of sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the strongholds of their enemies.17I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies,
Because you have obeyed me, all the nations of the earth will pronounce blessings on one another using the name of your descendants.'" 18and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.”
Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set out together for Beer Sheba where Abraham stayed. 19So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to Beersheba. And Abraham lived at Beersheba.
After these things Abraham was told, "Milcah also has borne children to your brother Nahor--20Now after these things it was told to Abraham, “Behold, Milcah also has borne children to your brother Nahor:
Uz the firstborn, his brother Buz, Kemuel (the father of Aram),21Uz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram,
Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel."22Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.”
(Now Bethuel became the father of Rebekah.) These were the eight sons Milcah bore to Abraham's brother Nahor.23(Bethuel fathered Rebekah.) These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother.
His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore him children--Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah. 24Moreover, his concubine, whose name was Reumah, bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.
