| 1Jehoshaphat passed away and was buried with his ancestors in the City of David. His son Jehoram replaced him as king. | 1Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David, and Jehoram his son reigned in his place. |
| 2His brothers, Jehoshaphat's sons, were Azariah, Jechiel, Zechariah, Azariahu, Michael, and Shephatiah. | 4Jehoram took control of his father's kingdom and became powerful. | 6He followed in the footsteps of the kings of Israel, just as Ahab's dynasty had done, for he married Ahab's daughter. And he did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. |
| 7But the LORD was unwilling to destroy David's dynasty because of the promise he had made to give David a perpetual dynasty. | 7Yet the LORD was not willing to destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and since he had promised to give a lamp to him and to his sons forever. |
| 8During Jehoram's reign Edom freed themselves from Judah's control and set up their own king. | 8In his days Edom revolted from the rule of Judah and set up a king of their own. |
| 9Jehoram crossed over to Zair with his officers and all his chariots. The Edomites, who had surrounded him, attacked at night and defeated him and his chariot officers. | 9Then Jehoram passed over with his commanders and all his chariots, and he rose by night and struck the Edomites who had surrounded him and his chariot commanders. |
| 10So Edom has remained free from Judah's control to this very day. At that same time Libnah also rebelled and freed themselves from Judah's control because Jehoram rejected the LORD God of his ancestors. | 10So Edom revolted from the rule of Judah to this day. | 11He also built high places on the hills of Judah; he encouraged the residents of Jerusalem to be unfaithful to the LORD and led Judah away from the LORD. | 11Moreover, he made high places in the hill country of Judah and led the inhabitants of Jerusalem into whoredom and made Judah go astray. |
| 12Jehoram received this letter from Elijah the prophet: "This is what the LORD God of your ancestor David says: 'You have not followed in the footsteps of your father Jehoshaphat and of King Asa of Judah, | 12And a letter came to him from Elijah the prophet, saying, “Thus says the LORD, the God of David your father, ‘Because you have not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat your father, or in the ways of Asa king of Judah, |
| 13but have instead followed in the footsteps of the kings of Israel. You encouraged the people of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem to be unfaithful to the LORD, just as the family of Ahab does in Israel. You also killed your brothers, members of your father's family, who were better than you. | 13but have walked in the way of the kings of Israel and have enticed Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem into whoredom, as the house of Ahab led Israel into whoredom, and also you have killed your brothers, of your father’s house, who were better than you, |
| 14So look, the LORD is about to severely afflict your people, your sons, your wives, and all you own. | 14behold, the LORD will bring a great plague on your people, your children, your wives, and all your possessions, |
| 15And you will get a serious, chronic intestinal disease which will cause your intestines to come out." | 15and you yourself will have a severe sickness with a disease of your bowels, until your bowels come out because of the disease, day by day.’” |
| 16The LORD stirred up against Jehoram the Philistines and the Arabs who lived beside the Cushites. | 16And the LORD stirred up against Jehoram the anger of the Philistines and of the Arabians who are near the Ethiopians. |
| 17They attacked Judah and swept through it. They carried off everything they found in the royal palace, including his sons and wives. None of his sons was left, except for his youngest, Ahaziah. | 17And they came up against Judah and invaded it and carried away all the possessions they found that belonged to the king’s house, and also his sons and his wives, so that no son was left to him except Jehoahaz, his youngest son. |
| 18After all this happened, the LORD afflicted him with an incurable intestinal disease. | 18And after all this the LORD struck him in his bowels with an incurable disease. |
| 19After about two years his intestines came out because of the disease, so that he died a very painful death. His people did not make a bonfire to honor him, as they had done for his ancestors. | 19In the course of time, at the end of two years, his bowels came out because of the disease, and he died in great agony. His people made no fire in his honor, like the fires made for his fathers. |
| 20Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. No one regretted his death; he was buried in the City of David, but not in the royal tombs. | 20He was thirty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. And he departed with no one’s regret. They buried him in the city of David, but not in the tombs of the kings. |
