For the music director; a well-written song by the Korahites. As a deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God! | 1As a deer longs for flowing streams, so I long for you, God. |
I thirst for God, for the living God. I say, "When will I be able to go and appear in God's presence?" | 2I thirst for God, the living God. When can I come and appear before God? |
I cannot eat, I weep day and night; all day long they say to me, "Where is your God?" | 3My tears have been my food day and night, while all day long people say to me, "Where is your God?" |
I will remember and weep! For I was once walking along with the great throng to the temple of God, shouting and giving thanks along with the crowd as we celebrated the holy festival. | 4I remember this as I pour out my heart: how I walked with many, leading the festive procession to the house of God, with joyful and thankful shouts. |
Why are you depressed, O my soul? Why are you upset? Wait for God! For I will again give thanks to my God for his saving intervention. | 5Why, my soul, are you so dejected? Why are you in such turmoil? Put your hope in God, for I will still praise him, my Savior and my God. |
I am depressed, so I will pray to you while I am trapped here in the region of the upper Jordan, from Hermon, from Mount Mizar. | 6I am deeply depressed; therefore I remember you from the land of Jordan and the peaks of Hermon, from Mount Mizar. |
One deep stream calls out to another at the sound of your waterfalls; all your billows and waves overwhelm me. | 7Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your billows have swept over me. |
By day the LORD decrees his loyal love, and by night he gives me a song, a prayer to the living God. | 8The LORD will send his faithful love by day; his song will be with me in the night--a prayer to the God of my life. |
I will pray to God, my high ridge: "Why do you ignore me? Why must I walk around mourning because my enemies oppress me?" | 9I will say to God, my rock, "Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about in sorrow because of the enemy's oppression?" |
My enemies' taunts cut into me to the bone, as they say to me all day long, "Where is your God?" | 10My adversaries taunt me, as if crushing my bones, while all day long they say to me, "Where is your God?" |
Why are you depressed, O my soul? Why are you upset? Wait for God! For I will again give thanks to my God for his saving intervention. | 11Why, my soul, are you so dejected? Why are you in such turmoil? Put your hope in God, for I will still praise him, my Savior and my God. |
