| 1For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you, and for those in Laodicea, and for those who have not met me face to face. | 1For I want you to know how greatly I am struggling for you, for those in Laodicea, and for all who have not seen me in person. |
| 2My goal is that their hearts, having been knit together in love, may be encouraged, and that they may have all the riches that assurance brings in their understanding of the knowledge of the mystery of God, namely, Christ, | 2I want their hearts to be encouraged and joined together in love, so that they may have all the riches of complete understanding and have the knowledge of God's mystery--Christ. |

| 18Let no one who delights in humility and the worship of angels pass judgment on you. That person goes on at great lengths about what he has supposedly seen, but he is puffed up with empty notions by his fleshly mind. | 18Let no one condemn you by delighting in ascetic practices and the worship of angels, claiming access to a visionary realm. Such people are inflated by empty notions of their unspiritual mind. |
| 19He has not held fast to the head from whom the whole body, supported and knit together through its ligaments and sinews, grows with a growth that is from God. | 19He doesn't hold on to the head, from whom the whole body, nourished and held together by its ligaments and tendons, grows with growth from God. |
| 20If you have died with Christ to the elemental spirits of the world, why do you submit to them as though you lived in the world? | 20If you died with Christ to the elements of this world, why do you live as if you still belonged to the world? Why do you submit to regulations: |
| 21"Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!" | 21"Don't handle, don't taste, don't touch"? |
| 22These are all destined to perish with use, founded as they are on human commands and teachings. | 22All these regulations refer to what is destined to perish by being used up; they are human commands and doctrines. |
| 23Even though they have the appearance of wisdom with their self-imposed worship and false humility achieved by an unsparing treatment of the body--a wisdom with no true value--they in reality result in fleshly indulgence. | 23Although these have a reputation for wisdom by promoting self-made religion, false humility, and severe treatment of the body, they are not of any value in curbing self-indulgence. |
