For the music director; according to the al-tashcheth style; a prayer of David, written when Saul sent men to surround his house and murder him. Deliver me from my enemies, my God! Protect me from those who attack me! | 1For the choirmaster. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A Miktam of David, when Saul sent men to watch David’s house in order to kill him. Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; protect me from those who rise against me. |
Deliver me from evildoers! Rescue me from violent men! | 2Deliver me from workers of iniquity, and save me from men of bloodshed. |
For look, they wait to ambush me; powerful men stalk me, but not because I have rebelled or sinned, O LORD. | 3See how they lie in wait for me. Fierce men conspire against me for no transgression or sin of my own, O LORD. |
Though I have done nothing wrong, they are anxious to attack. Spring into action and help me! Take notice of me! | 4For no fault of my own, they move swiftly to attack me. Arise to help me, and take notice. |
You, O LORD God, the invincible warrior, the God of Israel, rouse yourself and punish all the nations! Have no mercy on any treacherous evildoers! (Selah) | 5O LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, rouse Yourself to punish all the nations; show no mercy to the wicked traitors. Selah |
They return in the evening; they growl like a dog and prowl around outside the city. | 6They return in the evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city. |
Look, they hurl insults at me and openly threaten to kill me, for they say, "Who hears?" | 7See what they spew from their mouths—sharp words from their lips: “For who can hear us?” |
But you, O LORD, laugh in disgust at them; you taunt all the nations. | 8But You, O LORD, laugh at them; You scoff at all the nations. |
You are my source of strength! I will wait for you! For God is my refuge. | 9I will keep watch for You, O my strength, because You, O God, are my fortress. |
The God who loves me will help me; God will enable me to triumph over my enemies. | 10My God of loving devotion will come to meet me; God will let me stare down my foes. |
Do not strike them dead suddenly, because then my people might forget the lesson. Use your power to make them homeless vagabonds and then bring them down, O Lord who shields us! | 11Do not kill them, or my people will forget. Scatter them by Your power, and bring them down, O Lord, our shield. |
They speak sinful words. So let them be trapped by their own pride and by the curses and lies they speak! | 12By the sins of their mouths and the words of their lips, let them be trapped in their pride, in the curses and lies they utter. |
Angrily wipe them out! Wipe them out so they vanish! Let them know that God rules in Jacob and to the ends of the earth! (Selah) | 13Consume them in wrath; consume them till they are no more, so it may be known to the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob. Selah |
They return in the evening; they growl like a dog and prowl around outside the city. | 14They return in the evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city. |
They wander around looking for something to eat; they refuse to sleep until they are full. | 15They scavenge for food, and growl if they are not satisfied. |
As for me, I will sing about your strength; I will praise your loyal love in the morning. For you are my refuge and my place of shelter when I face trouble. | 16But I will sing of Your strength and proclaim Your loving devotion in the morning. For You are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble. |
You are my source of strength! I will sing praises to you! For God is my refuge, the God who loves me. | 17To You, O my strength, I sing praises, for You, O God, are my fortress, my God of loving devotion. |
