New American Standard Bible 1995 | New Living Translation |
Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and saw the stone already taken away from the tomb. | 1Early on Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. |
So she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him." | 2She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. She said, “They have taken the Lord’s body out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!” |
So Peter and the other disciple went forth, and they were going to the tomb. | 3Peter and the other disciple started out for the tomb. |
The two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead faster than Peter and came to the tomb first; | 4They were both running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. |
and stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings lying there; but he did not go in. | 5He stooped and looked in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he didn’t go in. |
And so Simon Peter also came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he saw the linen wrappings lying there, | 6Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there, |
and the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself. | 7while the cloth that had covered Jesus’ head was folded up and lying apart from the other wrappings. |
So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed. | 8Then the disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in, and he saw and believed— |
For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. | 9for until then they still hadn’t understood the Scriptures that said Jesus must rise from the dead. |
So the disciples went away again to their own homes. | 10Then they went home. Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene |
But Mary was standing outside the tomb weeping; and so, as she wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb; | 11Mary was standing outside the tomb crying, and as she wept, she stooped and looked in. |
and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. | 12She saw two white-robed angels, one sitting at the head and the other at the foot of the place where the body of Jesus had been lying. |
And they said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him." | 13“Dear woman, why are you crying?” the angels asked her. “Because they have taken away my Lord,” she replied, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” |
When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. | 14She turned to leave and saw someone standing there. It was Jesus, but she didn’t recognize him. |
Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?" Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, "Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away." | 15 “Dear woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asked her. “Who are you looking for?” She thought he was the gardener. “Sir,” she said, “if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and get him.” |
Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, "Rabboni!" (which means, Teacher). | 16 “Mary!” Jesus said. She turned to him and cried out, “Rabboni!” (which is Hebrew for “Teacher”). |
Jesus said to her, "Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, 'I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.'" | 17 “Don’t cling to me,” Jesus said, “for I haven’t yet ascended to the Father. But go find my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” |
Mary Magdalene came, announcing to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord," and that He had said these things to her. | 18Mary Magdalene found the disciples and told them, “I have seen the Lord!” Then she gave them his message. Jesus Appears to His Disciples |
So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with you." | 19That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” he said. |
And when He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord. | 20As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his side. They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord! |
So Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you." | 21Again he said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” |
And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. | 22Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. |
"If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained." | 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven. If you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” Jesus Appears to Thomas |
But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. | 24One of the twelve disciples, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), was not with the others when Jesus came. |
So the other disciples were saying to him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe." | 25They told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he replied, “I won’t believe it unless I see the nail wounds in his hands, put my fingers into them, and place my hand into the wound in his side.” |
After eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst and said, "Peace be with you." | 26Eight days later the disciples were together again, and this time Thomas was with them. The doors were locked; but suddenly, as before, Jesus was standing among them. “Peace be with you,” he said. |
Then He said to Thomas, "Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing." | 27Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Put your hand into the wound in my side. Don’t be faithless any longer. Believe!” |
Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!" | 28“My Lord and my God!” Thomas exclaimed. |
Jesus said to him, "Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed." | 29Then Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.” Purpose of the Book |
Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; | 30The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book. |
but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name. | 31But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name. |
