For the choir director; according to Jonath elem rehokim. A Mikhtam of David, when the Philistines seized him in Gath. Be gracious to me, O God, for man has trampled upon me; Fighting all day long he oppresses me. | 1For the director of music. To the tune of "A Dove on Distant Oaks." Of David. A miktam. When the Philistines had seized him in Gath. Be merciful to me, my God, for my enemies are in hot pursuit; all day long they press their attack. |
My foes have trampled upon me all day long, For they are many who fight proudly against me. | 2My adversaries pursue me all day long; in their pride many are attacking me. |
When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You. | 3When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. |
In God, whose word I praise, In God I have put my trust; I shall not be afraid. What can mere man do to me? | 4In God, whose word I praise-- in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? |
All day long they distort my words; All their thoughts are against me for evil. | 5All day long they twist my words; all their schemes are for my ruin. |
They attack, they lurk, They watch my steps, As they have waited to take my life. | 6They conspire, they lurk, they watch my steps, hoping to take my life. |
Because of wickedness, cast them forth, In anger put down the peoples, O God! | 7Because of their wickedness do not let them escape; in your anger, God, bring the nations down. |
You have taken account of my wanderings; Put my tears in Your bottle. Are they not in Your book? | 8Record my misery; list my tears on your scroll -- are they not in your record? |
Then my enemies will turn back in the day when I call; This I know, that God is for me. | 9Then my enemies will turn back when I call for help. By this I will know that God is for me. |
In God, whose word I praise, In the LORD, whose word I praise, | 10In God, whose word I praise, in the LORD, whose word I praise-- |
In God I have put my trust, I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me? | 11in God I trust and am not afraid. What can man do to me? |
Your vows are binding upon me, O God; I will render thank offerings to You. | 12I am under vows to you, my God; I will present my thank offerings to you. |
For You have delivered my soul from death, Indeed my feet from stumbling, So that I may walk before God In the light of the living. | 13For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life. |
