New American Standard Bible 1995 | New International Version |
Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth. | 1Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring. |
Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips. | 2Let someone else praise you, and not your own mouth; an outsider, and not your own lips. |
A stone is heavy and the sand weighty, But the provocation of a fool is heavier than both of them. | 3Stone is heavy and sand a burden, but a fool's provocation is heavier than both. |
Wrath is fierce and anger is a flood, But who can stand before jealousy? | 4Anger is cruel and fury overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy? |
Better is open rebuke Than love that is concealed. | 5Better is open rebuke than hidden love. |
Faithful are the wounds of a friend, But deceitful are the kisses of an enemy. | 6Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses. |
A sated man loathes honey, But to a famished man any bitter thing is sweet. | 7One who is full loathes honey from the comb, but to the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet. |
Like a bird that wanders from her nest, So is a man who wanders from his home. | 8Like a bird that flees its nest is anyone who flees from home. |
Oil and perfume make the heart glad, So a man's counsel is sweet to his friend. | 9Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of a friend springs from their heartfelt advice. |
Do not forsake your own friend or your father's friend, And do not go to your brother's house in the day of your calamity; Better is a neighbor who is near than a brother far away. | 10Do not forsake your friend or a friend of your family, and do not go to your relative's house when disaster strikes you-- better a neighbor nearby than a relative far away. |
Be wise, my son, and make my heart glad, That I may reply to him who reproaches me. | 11Be wise, my son, and bring joy to my heart; then I can answer anyone who treats me with contempt. |
A prudent man sees evil and hides himself, The naive proceed and pay the penalty. | 12The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty. |
Take his garment when he becomes surety for a stranger; And for an adulterous woman hold him in pledge. | 13Take the garment of one who puts up security for a stranger; hold it in pledge if it is done for an outsider. |
He who blesses his friend with a loud voice early in the morning, It will be reckoned a curse to him. | 14If anyone loudly blesses their neighbor early in the morning, it will be taken as a curse. |
A constant dripping on a day of steady rain And a contentious woman are alike; | 15A quarrelsome wife is like the dripping of a leaky roof in a rainstorm; |
He who would restrain her restrains the wind, And grasps oil with his right hand. | 16restraining her is like restraining the wind or grasping oil with the hand. |
Iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens another. | 17As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. |
He who tends the fig tree will eat its fruit, And he who cares for his master will be honored. | 18The one who guards a fig tree will eat its fruit, and whoever protects their master will be honored. |
As in water face reflects face, So the heart of man reflects man. | 19As water reflects the face, so one's life reflects the heart. |
Sheol and Abaddon are never satisfied, Nor are the eyes of man ever satisfied. | 20Death and Destruction are never satisfied, and neither are human eyes. |
The crucible is for silver and the furnace for gold, And each is tested by the praise accorded him. | 21The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but people are tested by their praise. |
Though you pound a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with crushed grain, Yet his foolishness will not depart from him. | 22Though you grind a fool in a mortar, grinding them like grain with a pestle, you will not remove their folly from them. |
Know well the condition of your flocks, And pay attention to your herds; | 23Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds; |
For riches are not forever, Nor does a crown endure to all generations. | 24for riches do not endure forever, and a crown is not secure for all generations. |
When the grass disappears, the new growth is seen, And the herbs of the mountains are gathered in, | 25When the hay is removed and new growth appears and the grass from the hills is gathered in, |
The lambs will be for your clothing, And the goats will bring the price of a field, | 26the lambs will provide you with clothing, and the goats with the price of a field. |
And there will be goats' milk enough for your food, For the food of your household, And sustenance for your maidens. | 27You will have plenty of goats' milk to feed your family and to nourish your female servants. |
