New American Standard Bible 1995 | New International Version |
Then the LORD said to me, "Take for yourself a large tablet and write on it in ordinary letters: Swift is the booty, speedy is the prey. | 1The LORD said to me, "Take a large scroll and write on it with an ordinary pen: Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz." |
"And I will take to Myself faithful witnesses for testimony, Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah." | 2So I called in Uriah the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah as reliable witnesses for me. |
So I approached the prophetess, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. Then the LORD said to me, "Name him Maher-shalal-hash-baz; | 3Then I made love to the prophetess, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. And the LORD said to me, "Name him Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz. |
for before the boy knows how to cry out 'My father ' or 'My mother,' the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be carried away before the king of Assyria." | 4For before the boy knows how to say 'My father' or 'My mother,' the wealth of Damascus and the plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria." |
Again the LORD spoke to me further, saying, | 5The LORD spoke to me again: |
"Inasmuch as these people have rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah And rejoice in Rezin and the son of Remaliah; | 6"Because this people has rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah and rejoices over Rezin and the son of Remaliah, |
"Now therefore, behold, the Lord is about to bring on them the strong and abundant waters of the Euphrates, Even the king of Assyria and all his glory; And it will rise up over all its channels and go over all its banks. | 7therefore the Lord is about to bring against them the mighty floodwaters of the Euphrates-- the king of Assyria with all his pomp. It will overflow all its channels, run over all its banks |
"Then it will sweep on into Judah, it will overflow and pass through, It will reach even to the neck; And the spread of its wings will fill the breadth of your land, O Immanuel. | 8and sweep on into Judah, swirling over it, passing through it and reaching up to the neck. Its outspread wings will cover the breadth of your land, Immanuel!" |
"Be broken, O peoples, and be shattered; And give ear, all remote places of the earth. Gird yourselves, yet be shattered; Gird yourselves, yet be shattered. | 9Raise the war cry, you nations, and be shattered! Listen, all you distant lands. Prepare for battle, and be shattered! Prepare for battle, and be shattered! |
"Devise a plan, but it will be thwarted; State a proposal, but it will not stand, For God is with us." | 10Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted; propose your plan, but it will not stand, for God is with us. |
For thus the LORD spoke to me with mighty power and instructed me not to walk in the way of this people, saying, | 11This is what the LORD says to me with his strong hand upon me, warning me not to follow the way of this people: |
"You are not to say, 'It is a conspiracy!' In regard to all that this people call a conspiracy, And you are not to fear what they fear or be in dread of it. | 12"Do not call conspiracy everything this people calls a conspiracy; do not fear what they fear, and do not dread it. |
"It is the LORD of hosts whom you should regard as holy. And He shall be your fear, And He shall be your dread. | 13The LORD Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy, he is the one you are to fear, he is the one you are to dread. |
"Then He shall become a sanctuary; But to both the houses of Israel, a stone to strike and a rock to stumble over, And a snare and a trap for the inhabitants of Jerusalem. | 14He will be a holy place; for both Israel and Judah he will be a stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall. And for the people of Jerusalem he will be a trap and a snare. |
"Many will stumble over them, Then they will fall and be broken; They will even be snared and caught." | 15Many of them will stumble; they will fall and be broken, they will be snared and captured." |
Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples. | 16Bind up this testimony of warning and seal up God's instruction among my disciples. |
And I will wait for the LORD who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob; I will even look eagerly for Him. | 17I will wait for the LORD, who is hiding his face from the descendants of Jacob. I will put my trust in him. |
Behold, I and the children whom the LORD has given me are for signs and wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion. | 18Here am I, and the children the LORD has given me. We are signs and symbols in Israel from the LORD Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion. |
When they say to you, "Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter," should not a people consult their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living? | 19When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? |
To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn. | 20Consult God's instruction and the testimony of warning. If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn. |
They will pass through the land hard-pressed and famished, and it will turn out that when they are hungry, they will be enraged and curse their king and their God as they face upward. | 21Distressed and hungry, they will roam through the land; when they are famished, they will become enraged and, looking upward, will curse their king and their God. |
Then they will look to the earth, and behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish; and they will be driven away into darkness. | 22Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom, and they will be thrust into utter darkness. |
