A Psalm of Asaph. The Mighty One, God, the LORD, has spoken, And summoned the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. | 1A psalm by Asaph. El, God, the LORD speaks, and summons the earth to come from the east and west. |
Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God has shone forth. | 2From Zion, the most beautiful of all places, God comes in splendor. |
May our God come and not keep silence; Fire devours before Him, And it is very tempestuous around Him. | 3Our God approaches and is not silent; consuming fire goes ahead of him and all around him a storm rages. |
He summons the heavens above, And the earth, to judge His people: | 4He summons the heavens above, as well as the earth, so that he might judge his people. |
"Gather My godly ones to Me, Those who have made a covenant with Me by sacrifice." | 5He says: "Assemble my covenant people before me, those who ratified a covenant with me by sacrifice!" |
And the heavens declare His righteousness, For God Himself is judge. Selah. | 6The heavens declare his fairness, for God is judge. (Selah) |
"Hear, O My people, and I will speak; O Israel, I will testify against you; I am God, your God. | 7He says: "Listen my people! I am speaking! Listen Israel! I am accusing you! I am God, your God! |
"I do not reprove you for your sacrifices, And your burnt offerings are continually before Me. | 8I am not condemning you because of your sacrifices, or because of your burnt sacrifices that you continually offer me. |
"I shall take no young bull out of your house Nor male goats out of your folds. | 9I do not need to take a bull from your household or goats from your sheepfolds. |
"For every beast of the forest is Mine, The cattle on a thousand hills. | 10For every wild animal in the forest belongs to me, as well as the cattle that graze on a thousand hills. |
"I know every bird of the mountains, And everything that moves in the field is Mine. | 11I keep track of every bird in the hills, and the insects of the field are mine. |
"If I were hungry I would not tell you, For the world is Mine, and all it contains. | 12Even if I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and all it contains belong to me. |
"Shall I eat the flesh of bulls Or drink the blood of male goats? | 13Do I eat the flesh of bulls? Do I drink the blood of goats? |
"Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving And pay your vows to the Most High; | 14Present to God a thank-offering! Repay your vows to the sovereign One! |
Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I shall rescue you, and you will honor Me." | 15Pray to me when you are in trouble! I will deliver you, and you will honor me!" |
But to the wicked God says, "What right have you to tell of My statutes And to take My covenant in your mouth? | 16God says this to the evildoer: "How can you declare my commands, and talk about my covenant? |
"For you hate discipline, And you cast My words behind you. | 17For you hate instruction and reject my words. |
"When you see a thief, you are pleased with him, And you associate with adulterers. | 18When you see a thief, you join him; you associate with men who are unfaithful to their wives. |
"You let your mouth loose in evil And your tongue frames deceit. | 19You do damage with words, and use your tongue to deceive. |
"You sit and speak against your brother; You slander your own mother's son. | 20You plot against your brother; you slander your own brother. |
"These things you have done and I kept silence; You thought that I was just like you; I will reprove you and state the case in order before your eyes. | 21When you did these things, I was silent, so you thought I was exactly like you. But now I will condemn you and state my case against you! |
"Now consider this, you who forget God, Or I will tear you in pieces, and there will be none to deliver. | 22Carefully consider this, you who reject God! Otherwise I will rip you to shreds and no one will be able to rescue you. |
"He who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving honors Me; And to him who orders his way aright I shall show the salvation of God." | 23Whoever presents a thank-offering honors me. To whoever obeys my commands, I will reveal my power to deliver." |
