The LORD spoke further to Moses, saying, | 1The LORD spoke to Moses: |
"Make yourself two trumpets of silver, of hammered work you shall make them; and you shall use them for summoning the congregation and for having the camps set out. | 2"Make two trumpets of silver; you are to make them from a single hammered piece. You will use them for assembling the community and for directing the traveling of the camps. |
"When both are blown, all the congregation shall gather themselves to you at the doorway of the tent of meeting. | 3When they blow them both, all the community must come to you to the entrance of the tent of meeting. |
"Yet if only one is blown, then the leaders, the heads of the divisions of Israel, shall assemble before you. | 4"But if they blow with one trumpet, then the leaders, the heads of the thousands of Israel, must come to you. |
"But when you blow an alarm, the camps that are pitched on the east side shall set out. | 5When you blow an alarm, then the camps that are located on the east side must begin to travel. |
"When you blow an alarm the second time, the camps that are pitched on the south side shall set out; an alarm is to be blown for them to set out. | 6And when you blow an alarm the second time, then the camps that are located on the south side must begin to travel. An alarm must be sounded for their journeys. |
"When convening the assembly, however, you shall blow without sounding an alarm. | 7But when you assemble the community, you must blow, but you must not sound an alarm. |
"The priestly sons of Aaron, moreover, shall blow the trumpets; and this shall be for you a perpetual statute throughout your generations. | 8The sons of Aaron, the priests, must blow the trumpets; and they will be to you for an eternal ordinance throughout your generations. |
"When you go to war in your land against the adversary who attacks you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets, that you may be remembered before the LORD your God, and be saved from your enemies. | 9If you go to war in your land against an adversary who opposes you, then you must sound an alarm with the trumpets, and you will be remembered before the LORD your God, and you will be saved from your enemies. |
"Also in the day of your gladness and in your appointed feasts, and on the first days of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; and they shall be as a reminder of you before your God. I am the LORD your God." | 10"Also in the time when you rejoice, such as on your appointed festivals or at the beginnings of your months, you must blow with your trumpets over your burnt offerings and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings, so that they may become a memorial for you before your God: I am the LORD your God." |
Now in the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth of the month, the cloud was lifted from over the tabernacle of the testimony; | 11On the twentieth day of the second month, in the second year, the cloud was taken up from the tabernacle of the testimony. |
and the sons of Israel set out on their journeys from the wilderness of Sinai. Then the cloud settled down in the wilderness of Paran. | 12So the Israelites set out on their journeys from the wilderness of Sinai; and the cloud settled in the wilderness of Paran. |
So they moved out for the first time according to the commandment of the LORD through Moses. | 13This was the first time they set out on their journey according to the commandment of the LORD, by the authority of Moses. |
The standard of the camp of the sons of Judah, according to their armies, set out first, with Nahshon the son of Amminadab, over its army, | 14The standard of the camp of the Judahites set out first according to their companies, and over his company was Nahshon son of Amminadab. |
and Nethanel the son of Zuar, over the tribal army of the sons of Issachar; | 15Over the company of the tribe of Issacharites was Nathanel son of Zuar, |
and Eliab the son of Helon over the tribal army of the sons of Zebulun. | 16and over the company of the tribe of the Zebulunites was Elion son of Helon. |
Then the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari, who were carrying the tabernacle, set out. | 17Then the tabernacle was dismantled, and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari set out, carrying the tabernacle. |
Next the standard of the camp of Reuben, according to their armies, set out with Elizur the son of Shedeur, over its army, | 18The standard of the camp of Reuben set out according to their companies; over his company was Elizur son of Shedeur. |
and Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai over the tribal army of the sons of Simeon, | 19Over the company of the tribe of the Simeonites was Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai, |
and Eliasaph the son of Deuel was over the tribal army of the sons of Gad. | 20and over the company of the tribe of the Gadites was Eliasaph son of Deuel. |
Then the Kohathites set out, carrying the holy objects; and the tabernacle was set up before their arrival. | 21And the Kohathites set out, carrying the articles for the sanctuary; the tabernacle was to be set up before they arrived. |
Next the standard of the camp of the sons of Ephraim, according to their armies, was set out, with Elishama the son of Ammihud over its army, | 22And the standard of the camp of the Ephraimites set out according to their companies; over his company was Elishama son of Ammihud. |
and Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur over the tribal army of the sons of Manasseh; | 23Over the company of the tribe of the Manassehites was Gamaliel son of Pedahzur, |
and Abidan the son of Gideoni over the tribal army of the sons of Benjamin. | 24and over the company of the tribe of Benjaminites was Abidan son of Gideoni. |
Then the standard of the camp of the sons of Dan, according to their armies, which formed the rear guard for all the camps, set out, with Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai over its army, | 25The standard of the camp of the Danites set out, which was the rear guard of all the camps by their companies; over his company was Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai. |
and Pagiel the son of Ochran over the tribal army of the sons of Asher; | 26Over the company of the tribe of the Asherites was Pagiel son of Ocran, |
and Ahira the son of Enan over the tribal army of the sons of Naphtali. | 27and over the company of the tribe of the Naphtalites was Ahira son of Enan. |
This was the order of march of the sons of Israel by their armies as they set out. | 28These were the traveling arrangements of the Israelites according to their companies when they traveled. |
Then Moses said to Hobab the son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses' father-in-law, "We are setting out to the place of which the LORD said, 'I will give it to you'; come with us and we will do you good, for the LORD has promised good concerning Israel." | 29Moses said to Hobab son of Reuel, the Midianite, Moses' father-in-law, "We are journeying to the place about which the LORD said, 'I will give it to you.' Come with us and we will treat you well, for the LORD has promised good things for Israel." |
But he said to him, "I will not come, but rather will go to my own land and relatives." | 30But Hobab said to him, "I will not go, but I will go instead to my own land and to my kindred." |
Then he said, "Please do not leave us, inasmuch as you know where we should camp in the wilderness, and you will be as eyes for us. | 31Moses said, "Do not leave us, because you know places for us to camp in the wilderness, and you could be our guide. |
"So it will be, if you go with us, that whatever good the LORD does for us, we will do for you." | 32And if you come with us, it is certain that whatever good things the LORD will favor us with, we will share with you as well." |
Thus they set out from the mount of the LORD three days' journey, with the ark of the covenant of the LORD journeying in front of them for the three days, to seek out a resting place for them. | 33So they traveled from the mountain of the LORD three days' journey; and the ark of the covenant of the LORD was traveling before them during the three days' journey, to find a resting place for them. |
The cloud of the LORD was over them by day when they set out from the camp. | 34And the cloud of the LORD was over them by day, when they traveled from the camp. |
Then it came about when the ark set out that Moses said, "Rise up, O LORD! And let Your enemies be scattered, And let those who hate You flee before You." | 35And when the ark traveled, Moses would say, "Rise up, O LORD! May your enemies be scattered, and may those who hate you flee before you!" |
When it came to rest, he said, "Return, O LORD, To the myriad thousands of Israel." | 36And when it came to rest he would say, "Return, O LORD, to the many thousands of Israel!" |
