| 5He continued to seek God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding through the vision of God; and as long as he sought the LORD, God prospered him. | 5He followed God during the lifetime of Zechariah, who taught him how to honor God. | 6Now he went out and warred against the Philistines, and broke down the wall of Gath and the wall of Jabneh and the wall of Ashdod; and he built cities in the area of Ashdod and among the Philistines. | 6Uzziah attacked the Philistines and broke down the walls of Gath, Jabneh, and Ashdod. He built cities in the region of Ashdod and throughout Philistine territory. |
| 7God helped him against the Philistines, and against the Arabians who lived in Gur-baal, and the Meunites. | 7God helped him in his campaigns against the Philistines, the Arabs living in Gur Baal, and the Meunites. |
| 8The Ammonites also gave tribute to Uzziah, and his fame extended to the border of Egypt, for he became very strong. | 8The Ammonites paid tribute to Uzziah and his fame reached the border of Egypt, for he grew in power. |
| 9Moreover, Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the Corner Gate and at the Valley Gate and at the corner buttress and fortified them. | 9Uzziah built and fortified towers in Jerusalem at the Corner Gate, Valley Gate, and at the Angle. |
| 10He built towers in the wilderness and hewed many cisterns, for he had much livestock, both in the lowland and in the plain. He also had plowmen and vinedressers in the hill country and the fertile fields, for he loved the soil. | 10He built towers in the desert and dug many cisterns, for he owned many herds in the lowlands and on the plain. He had workers in the fields and vineyards in the hills and in Carmel, for he loved agriculture. |
| 11Moreover, Uzziah had an army ready for battle, which entered combat by divisions according to the number of their muster, prepared by Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the official, under the direction of Hananiah, one of the king's officers. | 11Uzziah had an army of skilled warriors trained for battle. They were organized by divisions according to the muster rolls made by Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the officer under the authority of Hananiah, a royal official. |
| 12The total number of the heads of the households, of valiant warriors, was 2,600. | 12The total number of family leaders who led warriors was 2,600. |
| 13Under their direction was an elite army of 307,500, who could wage war with great power, to help the king against the enemy. | 13They commanded an army of 307,500 skilled and able warriors who were ready to defend the king against his enemies. |
| 14Moreover, Uzziah prepared for all the army shields, spears, helmets, body armor, bows and sling stones. | 14Uzziah supplied shields, spears, helmets, breastplates, bows, and slingstones for the entire army. |
| 15In Jerusalem he made engines of war invented by skillful men to be on the towers and on the corners for the purpose of shooting arrows and great stones. Hence his fame spread afar, for he was marvelously helped until he was strong. | 15In Jerusalem he made war machines carefully designed to shoot arrows and large stones from the towers and corners of the walls. He became very famous, for he received tremendous support and became powerful. |
| 16But when he became strong, his heart was so proud that he acted corruptly, and he was unfaithful to the LORD his God, for he entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense. | 16But once he became powerful, his pride destroyed him. He disobeyed the LORD his God. He entered the LORD's temple to offer incense on the incense altar. |
| 17Then Azariah the priest entered after him and with him eighty priests of the LORD, valiant men. | 17Azariah the priest and eighty other brave priests of the LORD followed him in. |
| 18They opposed Uzziah the king and said to him, "It is not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the LORD, but for the priests, the sons of Aaron who are consecrated to burn incense. Get out of the sanctuary, for you have been unfaithful and will have no honor from the LORD God." | 18They confronted King Uzziah and said to him, "It is not proper for you, Uzziah, to offer incense to the LORD. That is the responsibility of the priests, the descendants of Aaron, who are consecrated to offer incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have disobeyed and the LORD God will not honor you!" |
| 19But Uzziah, with a censer in his hand for burning incense, was enraged; and while he was enraged with the priests, the leprosy broke out on his forehead before the priests in the house of the LORD, beside the altar of incense. | 19Uzziah, who had an incense censer in his hand, became angry. While he was ranting and raving at the priests, a skin disease appeared on his forehead right there in front of the priests in the LORD's temple near the incense altar. |
| 20Azariah the chief priest and all the priests looked at him, and behold, he was leprous on his forehead; and they hurried him out of there, and he himself also hastened to get out because the LORD had smitten him. | 20When Azariah the high priest and the other priests looked at him, there was a skin disease on his forehead. They hurried him out of there; even the king himself wanted to leave quickly because the LORD had afflicted him. |
| 21King Uzziah was a leper to the day of his death; and he lived in a separate house, being a leper, for he was cut off from the house of the LORD. And Jotham his son was over the king's house judging the people of the land. | 21King Uzziah suffered from a skin disease until the day he died. He lived in separate quarters, afflicted by a skin disease and banned from the LORD's temple. His son Jotham was in charge of the palace and ruled over the people of the land. |
| 22Now the rest of the acts of Uzziah, first to last, the prophet Isaiah, the son of Amoz, has written. | 22The rest of the events of Uzziah's reign, from start to finish, were recorded by the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz. |
| 23So Uzziah slept with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers in the field of the grave which belonged to the kings, for they said, "He is a leper." And Jotham his son became king in his place. | 23Uzziah passed away and was buried near his ancestors in a cemetery belonging to the kings. (This was because he had a skin disease.) His son Jotham replaced him as king. |
