Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware. | 1With regard to spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. |
You know that when you were pagans, you were led astray to the mute idols, however you were led. | 2You know that when you were pagans you were often led astray by speechless idols, however you were led. |
Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus is accursed"; and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. | 3So I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus is cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. |
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. | 4Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit. |
And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. | 5And there are different ministries, but the same Lord. |
There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. | 6And there are different results, but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. |
But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. | 7To each person the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the benefit of all. |
For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; | 8For one person is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, and another the message of knowledge according to the same Spirit, |
to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, | 9to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, |
and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. | 10to another performance of miracles, to another prophecy, and to another discernment of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. |
But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills. | 11It is one and the same Spirit, distributing as he decides to each person, who produces all these things. |
For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ. | 12For just as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body--though many--are one body, so too is Christ. |
For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. | 13For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. Whether Jews or Greeks or slaves or free, we were all made to drink of the one Spirit. |
For the body is not one member, but many. | 14For in fact the body is not a single member, but many. |
If the foot says, "Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body," it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body. | 15If the foot says, "Since I am not a hand, I am not part of the body," it does not lose its membership in the body because of that. |
And if the ear says, "Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body," it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body. | 16And if the ear says, "Since I am not an eye, I am not part of the body," it does not lose its membership in the body because of that. |
If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? | 17If the whole body were an eye, what part would do the hearing? If the whole were an ear, what part would exercise the sense of smell? |
But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired. | 18But as a matter of fact, God has placed each of the members in the body just as he decided. |
If they were all one member, where would the body be? | 19If they were all the same member, where would the body be? |
But now there are many members, but one body. | 20So now there are many members, but one body. |
And the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you"; or again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you." | 21The eye cannot say to the hand, "I do not need you," nor in turn can the head say to the foot, "I do not need you." |
On the contrary, it is much truer that the members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary; | 22On the contrary, those members that seem to be weaker are essential, |
and those members of the body which we deem less honorable, on these we bestow more abundant honor, and our less presentable members become much more presentable, | 23and those members we consider less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our unpresentable members are clothed with dignity, |
whereas our more presentable members have no need of it. But God has so composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that member which lacked, | 24but our presentable members do not need this. Instead, God has blended together the body, giving greater honor to the lesser member, |
so that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. | 25so that there may be no division in the body, but the members may have mutual concern for one another. |
And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. | 26If one member suffers, everyone suffers with it. If a member is honored, all rejoice with it. |
Now you are Christ's body, and individually members of it. | 27Now you are Christ's body, and each of you is a member of it. |
And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues. | 28And God has placed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, gifts of healing, helps, gifts of leadership, different kinds of tongues. |
All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of miracles, are they? | 29Not all are apostles, are they? Not all are prophets, are they? Not all are teachers, are they? Not all perform miracles, do they? |
All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they? | 30Not all have gifts of healing, do they? Not all speak in tongues, do they? Not all interpret, do they? |
But earnestly desire the greater gifts. And I show you a still more excellent way. | 31But you should be eager for the greater gifts. And now I will show you a way that is beyond comparison. |
