My son, keep my words And treasure my commandments within you. | 1My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee. |
Keep my commandments and live, And my teaching as the apple of your eye. | 2Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye. |
Bind them on your fingers; Write them on the tablet of your heart. | 3Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart. |
Say to wisdom, "You are my sister," And call understanding your intimate friend; | 4Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman: |
That they may keep you from an adulteress, From the foreigner who flatters with her words. | 5That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words. |
For at the window of my house I looked out through my lattice, | 6For at the window of my house I looked through my casement, |
And I saw among the naive, And discerned among the youths A young man lacking sense, | 7And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding, |
Passing through the street near her corner; And he takes the way to her house, | 8Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house, |
In the twilight, in the evening, In the middle of the night and in the darkness. | 9In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night: |
And behold, a woman comes to meet him, Dressed as a harlot and cunning of heart. | 10And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart. |
She is boisterous and rebellious, Her feet do not remain at home; | 11(She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house: |
She is now in the streets, now in the squares, And lurks by every corner. | 12Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.) |
So she seizes him and kisses him And with a brazen face she says to him: | 13So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him, |
"I was due to offer peace offerings; Today I have paid my vows. | 14I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows. |
"Therefore I have come out to meet you, To seek your presence earnestly, and I have found you. | 15Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee. |
"I have spread my couch with coverings, With colored linens of Egypt. | 16I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt. |
"I have sprinkled my bed With myrrh, aloes and cinnamon. | 17I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. |
"Come, let us drink our fill of love until morning; Let us delight ourselves with caresses. | 18Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves. |
"For my husband is not at home, He has gone on a long journey; | 19For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey: |
He has taken a bag of money with him, At the full moon he will come home." | 20He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed. |
With her many persuasions she entices him; With her flattering lips she seduces him. | 21With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him. |
Suddenly he follows her As an ox goes to the slaughter, Or as one in fetters to the discipline of a fool, | 22He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks; |
Until an arrow pierces through his liver; As a bird hastens to the snare, So he does not know that it will cost him his life. | 23Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life. |
Now therefore, my sons, listen to me, And pay attention to the words of my mouth. | 24Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth. |
Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways, Do not stray into her paths. | 25Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths. |
For many are the victims she has cast down, And numerous are all her slain. | 26For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her. |
Her house is the way to Sheol, Descending to the chambers of death. | 27Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death. |
