| 1On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; | 1On the third day of that week there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, |
| 2and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. | 2and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. |
| 3When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine." | 3When the wine ran out, Jesus' mother told him, "They don't have any more wine." |
| 4And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come." | 4"How does that concern us, dear lady?" Jesus asked her. "My time hasn't come yet." |
| 5His mother said to the servants, "Whatever He says to you, do it." | 5His mother told the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." |
| 6Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each. | 6Now standing there were six stone water jars used for the Jewish rites of purification, each one holding from two to three measures. |
| 7Jesus said to them, "Fill the waterpots with water." So they filled them up to the brim. | 7Jesus told the servants, "Fill the jars with water." So they filled them up to the brim. |
| 8And He said to them, "Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter." So they took it to him. | 8Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the man in charge of the banquet." So they did. |
| 9When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom, | 9When the man in charge of the banquet tasted the water that had become wine (without knowing where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew), he called for the bridegroom |
| 10and said to him, "Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now." | 10and told him, "Everyone serves the best wine first, and the cheap kind when people are drunk. But you have kept the best wine until now!" |
| 11This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him. | 11Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee. He revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him. |
| 12After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother and His brothers and His disciples; and they stayed there a few days. | 12After this, Jesus went down to Capernaum—he, his mother, his brothers, and his disciples—and they remained there for a few days. |
| 13The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. | 13The Jewish Passover was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. |
| 14And He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. | 14In the Temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, as well as moneychangers sitting at their tables. |
| 15And He made a scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables; | 15After making a whip out of cords, he drove all of them out of the Temple, including the sheep and the cattle. He scattered the coins of the moneychangers and knocked over their tables. |
| 16and to those who were selling the doves He said, "Take these things away; stop making My Father's house a place of business." | 16Then he told those who were selling the doves, "Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father's house a marketplace!" |
| 17His disciples remembered that it was written, "ZEAL FOR YOUR HOUSE WILL CONSUME ME." | 17His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for your house will consume me." |
| 18The Jews then said to Him, "What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?" | 18Then the Jewish leaders asked him, "What sign can you show us as authority for doing these things?" |
| 19Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." | 19Jesus answered them, "Destroy this sanctuary, and in three days I will rebuild it." |
| 20The Jews then said, "It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?" | 20The Jewish leaders said, "This sanctuary has been under construction for 46 years, and you're going to rebuild it in three days?" |
| 21But He was speaking of the temple of His body. | 21But the sanctuary he was speaking about was his own body. |
| 22So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken. | 22After he had been raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this. So they believed the Scripture and the statement that Jesus had made. |
| 23Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, observing His signs which He was doing. | 23While Jesus was in Jerusalem for the Passover Festival, many people believed in him because they saw the signs that he was doing. |
| 24But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men, | 24Jesus, however, did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people |
| 25and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man. | 25and didn't need anyone to tell him what people were like, because he himself knew what was in every person. |
