New American Standard Bible 1995 | International Standard Version |
Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, | 1Therefore, as a fellow elder, a witness of the Messiah's sufferings, and one who shares in the glory to be revealed, I appeal to the elders among you: |
shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; | 2Be shepherds of God's flock that is among you, watching over it, not because you must but because you want to, and not greedily but eagerly, as God desires. |
nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock. | 3Do not lord it over the people entrusted to you, but be examples to the flock. |
And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. | 4Then, when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the victor's crown of glory that will never fade away. |
You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE. | 5In a similar way, you young people must submit to the elders. All of you must clothe yourselves with humility for the sake of each other, because: "God opposes the arrogant, but gives grace to the humble." |
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, | 6Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, so that at the proper time he may exalt you. |
casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. | 7Throw all your worry on him, because he cares for you. |
Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. | 8Be clear-minded and alert. Your opponent, the devil, is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. |
But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world. | 9Resist him and be firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering. |
After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you. | 10After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you by the Messiah Jesus to his eternal glory, will restore you, establish you, strengthen you, and support you. |
To Him be dominion forever and ever. Amen. | 11Power belongs to him forever and ever! Amen. |
Through Silvanus, our faithful brother (for so I regard him), I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it! | 12Through Silvanus, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written this short letter to encourage you and to testify that this is to be the true grace of God in which you are to stand firm! |
She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, and so does my son, Mark. | 13Your sister church in Babylon, chosen along with you, sends you greetings, as does Mark, whom I regard as a son. |
Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace be to you all who are in Christ. | 14Greet one another with a loving kiss. Peace be to all of you who are in the Messiah! |
