The LORD spoke again to Moses and to Aaron, saying to them,1The LORD spoke again to Moses and Aaron, telling them,
"Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, 'These are the creatures which you may eat from all the animals that are on the earth.2“Say to the Israelites, ‘Of all the beasts of the earth, these ones you may eat:
Whatever divides a hoof, thus making split hoofs, and chews the cud, among the animals, that you may eat.3You may eat any animal that has a split hoof completely divided and that chews the cud.
'Nevertheless, you are not to eat of these, among those which chew the cud, or among those which divide the hoof: the camel, for though it chews cud, it does not divide the hoof, it is unclean to you.4But of those that only chew the cud or only have a divided hoof, you are not to eat the following: The camel, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you.
'Likewise, the shaphan, for though it chews cud, it does not divide the hoof, it is unclean to you;5The rock badger, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you.
the rabbit also, for though it chews cud, it does not divide the hoof, it is unclean to you;6The rabbit, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you.
and the pig, for though it divides the hoof, thus making a split hoof, it does not chew cud, it is unclean to you.7And the pig, though it has a split hoof completely divided, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you.
'You shall not eat of their flesh nor touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you.8You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you.
'These you may eat, whatever is in the water: all that have fins and scales, those in the water, in the seas or in the rivers, you may eat.9Of all the creatures that live in the water, whether in the seas or in the streams, you may eat anything with fins and scales.
'But whatever is in the seas and in the rivers that does not have fins and scales among all the teeming life of the water, and among all the living creatures that are in the water, they are detestable things to you,10But the following among all the teeming life and creatures in the water are detestable to you: everything in the seas or streams that does not have fins and scales.
and they shall be abhorrent to you; you may not eat of their flesh, and their carcasses you shall detest.11They shall be an abomination to you; you must not eat their meat, and you must detest their carcasses.
'Whatever in the water does not have fins and scales is abhorrent to you.12Everything in the water that does not have fins and scales shall be detestable to you.
'These, moreover, you shall detest among the birds; they are abhorrent, not to be eaten: the eagle and the vulture and the buzzard,13Additionally, you are to detest the following birds, and they must not be eaten because they are detestable: the eagle, the bearded vulture, the black vulture,
and the kite and the falcon in its kind,14the kite, any kind of falcon,
every raven in its kind,15any kind of raven,
and the ostrich and the owl and the sea gull and the hawk in its kind,16the ostrich, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk,
and the little owl and the cormorant and the great owl,17the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl,
and the white owl and the pelican and the carrion vulture,18the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey,
and the stork, the heron in its kinds, and the hoopoe, and the bat.19the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe, and the bat.
All the winged insects that walk on all fours are detestable to you.20All flying insects that walk on all fours are detestable to you.
Yet these you may eat among all the winged insects which walk on all fours: those which have above their feet jointed legs with which to jump on the earth.21However, you may eat the following kinds of flying insects that walk on all fours: those having jointed legs above their feet for hopping on the ground.
'These of them you may eat: the locust in its kinds, and the devastating locust in its kinds, and the cricket in its kinds, and the grasshopper in its kinds.22Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket, or grasshopper.
'But all other winged insects which are four-footed are detestable to you.23All other flying insects that have four legs are detestable to you.
'By these, moreover, you will be made unclean: whoever touches their carcasses becomes unclean until evening,24These creatures will make you unclean. Whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening,
and whoever picks up any of their carcasses shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening.25and whoever picks up one of their carcasses must wash his clothes, and he will be unclean until evening.
Concerning all the animals which divide the hoof but do not make a split hoof, or which do not chew cud, they are unclean to you: whoever touches them becomes unclean.26Every animal with hooves not completely divided or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you. Whoever touches any of them will be unclean.
Also whatever walks on its paws, among all the creatures that walk on all fours, are unclean to you; whoever touches their carcasses becomes unclean until evening,27All the four-footed animals that walk on their paws are unclean for you; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening,
and the one who picks up their carcasses shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening; they are unclean to you.28and anyone who picks up a carcass must wash his clothes, and he will be unclean until evening. They are unclean for you.
'Now these are to you the unclean among the swarming things which swarm on the earth: the mole, and the mouse, and the great lizard in its kinds,29The following creatures that move along the ground are unclean for you: the mole, the mouse, any kind of great lizard,
and the gecko, and the crocodile, and the lizard, and the sand reptile, and the chameleon.30the gecko, the monitor lizard, the common lizard, the skink, and the chameleon.
'These are to you the unclean among all the swarming things; whoever touches them when they are dead becomes unclean until evening.31These animals are unclean for you among all the crawling creatures. Whoever touches them when they are dead shall be unclean until evening.
'Also anything on which one of them may fall when they are dead becomes unclean, including any wooden article, or clothing, or a skin, or a sack-- any article of which use is made-- it shall be put in the water and be unclean until evening, then it becomes clean.32When one of them dies and falls on something, that article becomes unclean; any article of wood, clothing, leather, sackcloth, or any implement used for work must be rinsed with water and will remain unclean until evening; then it will be clean.
'As for any earthenware vessel into which one of them may fall, whatever is in it becomes unclean and you shall break the vessel.33If any of them falls into a clay pot, everything in it will be unclean; you must break the pot.
'Any of the food which may be eaten, on which water comes, shall become unclean, and any liquid which may be drunk in every vessel shall become unclean.34Any food coming into contact with water from that pot will be unclean, and any drink in such a container will be unclean.
'Everything, moreover, on which part of their carcass may fall becomes unclean; an oven or a stove shall be smashed; they are unclean and shall continue as unclean to you.35Anything upon which one of their carcasses falls will be unclean. If it is an oven or cooking pot, it must be smashed; it is unclean and will remain unclean for you.
'Nevertheless a spring or a cistern collecting water shall be clean, though the one who touches their carcass shall be unclean.36Nevertheless, a spring or cistern containing water will remain clean, but one who touches a carcass in it will be unclean.
'If a part of their carcass falls on any seed for sowing which is to be sown, it is clean.37If a carcass falls on any seed for sowing, the seed is clean;
'Though if water is put on the seed and a part of their carcass falls on it, it is unclean to you.38but if water has been put on the seed and a carcass falls on it, it is unclean for you.
'Also if one of the animals dies which you have for food, the one who touches its carcass becomes unclean until evening.39If an animal that you may eat dies, anyone who touches the carcass will be unclean until evening.
'He too, who eats some of its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening, and the one who picks up its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening.40Whoever eats from the carcass must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening, and anyone who picks up the carcass must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening.
'Now every swarming thing that swarms on the earth is detestable, not to be eaten.41Every creature that moves along the ground is detestable; it must not be eaten.
Whatever crawls on its belly, and whatever walks on all fours, whatever has many feet, in respect to every swarming thing that swarms on the earth, you shall not eat them, for they are detestable.42Do not eat any creature that moves along the ground, whether it crawls on its belly or walks on four or more feet; for such creatures are detestable.
'Do not render yourselves detestable through any of the swarming things that swarm; and you shall not make yourselves unclean with them so that you become unclean.43Do not defile yourselves by any crawling creature; do not become unclean or defiled by them.
'For I am the LORD your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. And you shall not make yourselves unclean with any of the swarming things that swarm on the earth.44For I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves, therefore, and be holy, because I am holy. You must not defile yourselves by any creature that crawls along the ground.
'For I am the LORD who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God; thus you shall be holy, for I am holy.'"45For I am the LORD, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt so that I would be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy.
This is the law regarding the animal and the bird, and every living thing that moves in the waters and everything that swarms on the earth,46This is the law regarding animals, birds, all living creatures that move in the water, and all creatures that crawl along the ground.
to make a distinction between the unclean and the clean, and between the edible creature and the creature which is not to be eaten.47You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between animals that may be eaten and those that may not.’ ”
