King James Bible | New Living Translation |
Hear ye this, O priests; and hearken, ye house of Israel; and give ye ear, O house of the king; for judgment is toward you, because ye have been a snare on Mizpah, and a net spread upon Tabor. | 1“Hear this, you priests. Pay attention, you leaders of Israel. Listen, you members of the royal family. Judgment has been handed down against you. For you have led the people into a snare by worshiping the idols at Mizpah and Tabor. |
And the revolters are profound to make slaughter, though I have been a rebuker of them all. | 2You have dug a deep pit to trap them at Acacia Grove. But I will settle with you for what you have done. |
I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hid from me: for now, O Ephraim, thou committest whoredom, and Israel is defiled. | 3I know what you are like, O Ephraim. You cannot hide yourself from me, O Israel. You have left me as a prostitute leaves her husband; you are utterly defiled. |
They will not frame their doings to turn unto their God: for the spirit of whoredoms is in the midst of them, and they have not known the LORD. | 4Your deeds won’t let you return to your God. You are a prostitute through and through, and you do not know the LORD. |
And the pride of Israel doth testify to his face: therefore shall Israel and Ephraim fall in their iniquity; Judah also shall fall with them. | 5“The arrogance of Israel testifies against her; Israel and Ephraim will stumble under their load of guilt. Judah, too, will fall with them. |
They shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek the LORD; but they shall not find him; he hath withdrawn himself from them. | 6When they come with their flocks and herds to offer sacrifices to the LORD, they will not find him, because he has withdrawn from them. |
They have dealt treacherously against the LORD: for they have begotten strange children: now shall a month devour them with their portions. | 7They have betrayed the honor of the LORD, bearing children that are not his. Now their false religion will devour them along with their wealth. |
Blow ye the cornet in Gibeah, and the trumpet in Ramah: cry aloud at Bethaven, after thee, O Benjamin. | 8“Sound the alarm in Gibeah! Blow the trumpet in Ramah! Raise the battle cry in Beth-aven ! Lead on into battle, O warriors of Benjamin! |
Ephraim shall be desolate in the day of rebuke: among the tribes of Israel have I made known that which shall surely be. | 9One thing is certain, Israel : On your day of punishment, you will become a heap of rubble. |
The princes of Judah were like them that remove the bound: therefore I will pour out my wrath upon them like water. | 10“The leaders of Judah have become like thieves. So I will pour my anger on them like a waterfall. |
Ephraim is oppressed and broken in judgment, because he willingly walked after the commandment. | 11The people of Israel will be crushed and broken by my judgment because they are determined to worship idols. |
Therefore will I be unto Ephraim as a moth, and to the house of Judah as rottenness. | 12I will destroy Israel as a moth consumes wool. I will make Judah as weak as rotten wood. |
When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah saw his wound, then went Ephraim to the Assyrian, and sent to king Jareb: yet could he not heal you, nor cure you of your wound. | 13“When Israel and Judah saw how sick they were, Israel turned to Assyria— to the great king there— but he could neither help nor cure them. |
For I will be unto Ephraim as a lion, and as a young lion to the house of Judah: I, even I, will tear and go away; I will take away, and none shall rescue him. | 14I will be like a lion to Israel, like a strong young lion to Judah. I will tear them to pieces! I will carry them off, and no one will be left to rescue them. |
I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early. | 15Then I will return to my place until they admit their guilt and turn to me. For as soon as trouble comes, they will earnestly search for me.” |
