| 1Then David said, This is the house of the LORD God, and this is the altar of the burnt offering for Israel. | 1Then David said, “This will be the location for the Temple of the LORD God and the place of the altar for Israel’s burnt offerings!” Preparations for the Temple |
| 2And David commanded to gather together the strangers that were in the land of Israel; and he set masons to hew wrought stones to build the house of God. | 2So David gave orders to call together the foreigners living in Israel, and he assigned them the task of preparing finished stone for building the Temple of God. |
| 3And David prepared iron in abundance for the nails for the doors of the gates, and for the joinings; and brass in abundance without weight; | 3David provided large amounts of iron for the nails that would be needed for the doors in the gates and for the clamps, and he gave more bronze than could be weighed. |
| 4Also cedar trees in abundance: for the Zidonians and they of Tyre brought much cedar wood to David. | 4He also provided innumerable cedar logs, for the men of Tyre and Sidon had brought vast amounts of cedar to David. |
| 5And David said, Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be builded for the LORD must be exceeding magnifical, of fame and of glory throughout all countries: I will therefore now make preparation for it. So David prepared abundantly before his death. | 5David said, “My son Solomon is still young and inexperienced. And since the Temple to be built for the LORD must be a magnificent structure, famous and glorious throughout the world, I will begin making preparations for it now.” So David collected vast amounts of building materials before his death. |
| 6Then he called for Solomon his son, and charged him to build an house for the LORD God of Israel. | 6Then David sent for his son Solomon and instructed him to build a Temple for the LORD, the God of Israel. |
| 7And David said to Solomon, My son, as for me, it was in my mind to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God: | 7“My son, I wanted to build a Temple to honor the name of the LORD my God,” David told him. |
| 8But the word of the LORD came to me, saying, Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast made great wars: thou shalt not build an house unto my name, because thou hast shed much blood upon the earth in my sight. | 8“But the LORD said to me, ‘You have killed many men in the battles you have fought. And since you have shed so much blood in my sight, you will not be the one to build a Temple to honor my name. |
| 9Behold, a son shall be born to thee, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about: for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his days. | 9But you will have a son who will be a man of peace. I will give him peace with his enemies in all the surrounding lands. His name will be Solomon, and I will give peace and quiet to Israel during his reign. |
| 10He shall build an house for my name; and he shall be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever. | 10He is the one who will build a Temple to honor my name. He will be my son, and I will be his father. And I will secure the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever.’ |
| 11Now, my son, the LORD be with thee; and prosper thou, and build the house of the LORD thy God, as he hath said of thee. | 11“Now, my son, may the LORD be with you and give you success as you follow his directions in building the Temple of the LORD your God. |
| 12Only the LORD give thee wisdom and understanding, and give thee charge concerning Israel, that thou mayest keep the law of the LORD thy God. | 12And may the LORD give you wisdom and understanding, that you may obey the Law of the LORD your God as you rule over Israel. |
| 13Then shalt thou prosper, if thou takest heed to fulfil the statutes and judgments which the LORD charged Moses with concerning Israel: be strong, and of good courage; dread not, nor be dismayed. | 13For you will be successful if you carefully obey the decrees and regulations that the LORD gave to Israel through Moses. Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid or lose heart! |
| 14Now, behold, in my trouble I have prepared for the house of the LORD an hundred thousand talents of gold, and a thousand thousand talents of silver; and of brass and iron without weight; for it is in abundance: timber also and stone have I prepared; and thou mayest add thereto. | 14“I have worked hard to provide materials for building the Temple of the LORD—nearly 4,000 tons of gold, 40,000 tons of silver, and so much iron and bronze that it cannot be weighed. I have also gathered timber and stone for the walls, though you may need to add more. |
| 15Moreover there are workmen with thee in abundance, hewers and workers of stone and timber, and all manner of cunning men for every manner of work. | 15You have a large number of skilled stonemasons and carpenters and craftsmen of every kind. |
| 16Of the gold, the silver, and the brass, and the iron, there is no number. Arise therefore, and be doing, and the LORD be with thee. | 16You have expert goldsmiths and silversmiths and workers of bronze and iron. Now begin the work, and may the LORD be with you!” |
| 17David also commanded all the princes of Israel to help Solomon his son, saying, | 17Then David ordered all the leaders of Israel to assist Solomon in this project. |
| 18Is not the LORD your God with you? and hath he not given you rest on every side? for he hath given the inhabitants of the land into mine hand; and the land is subdued before the LORD, and before his people. | 18“The LORD your God is with you,” he declared. “He has given you peace with the surrounding nations. He has handed them over to me, and they are now subject to the LORD and his people. |
| 19Now set your heart and your soul to seek the LORD your God; arise therefore, and build ye the sanctuary of the LORD God, to bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and the holy vessels of God, into the house that is to be built to the name of the LORD. | 19Now seek the LORD your God with all your heart and soul. Build the sanctuary of the LORD God so that you can bring the Ark of the LORD’s Covenant and the holy vessels of God into the Temple built to honor the LORD’s name.” |
