| 1And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac. | 1So Israel set out with all that was his, and when he reached Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. |
| 2And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I. | 2And God spoke to Israel in a vision at night and said, "Jacob! Jacob!" "Here I am," he replied. |
| 3And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation: | 3"I am God, the God of your father," he said. "Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there. |
| 4I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes. | 4I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again. And Joseph's own hand will close your eyes." |
| 5And Jacob rose up from Beersheba: and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. | 5Then Jacob left Beersheba, and Israel's sons took their father Jacob and their children and their wives in the carts that Pharaoh had sent to transport him. |
| 6And they took their cattle, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob, and all his seed with him: | 6So Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt, taking with them their livestock and the possessions they had acquired in Canaan. |
| 7His sons, and his sons' sons with him, his daughters, and his sons' daughters, and all his seed brought he with him into Egypt. | 7Jacob brought with him to Egypt his sons and grandsons and his daughters and granddaughters--all his offspring. |
| 8And these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacob's firstborn. | 8These are the names of the sons of Israel (Jacob and his descendants) who went to Egypt: Reuben the firstborn of Jacob. |

| 12And the sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Pharez, and Zerah: but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. And the sons of Pharez were Hezron and Hamul. | 12The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez and Zerah (but Er and Onan had died in the land of Canaan). The sons of Perez: Hezron and Hamul. |

| 18These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter, and these she bare unto Jacob, even sixteen souls. | 18These were the children born to Jacob by Zilpah, whom Laban had given to his daughter Leah--sixteen in all. |
| 19The sons of Rachel Jacob's wife; Joseph, and Benjamin. | 19The sons of Jacob's wife Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. |
| 20And unto Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, which Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On bare unto him. | 20In Egypt, Manasseh and Ephraim were born to Joseph by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On. |
| 21And the sons of Benjamin were Belah, and Becher, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, Ehi, and Rosh, Muppim, and Huppim, and Ard. | 21The sons of Benjamin: Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim and Ard. |
| 22These are the sons of Rachel, which were born to Jacob: all the souls were fourteen. | 22These were the sons of Rachel who were born to Jacob--fourteen in all. |

| 24And the sons of Naphtali; Jahzeel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem. | 24The sons of Naphtali: Jahziel, Guni, Jezer and Shillem. |
| 25These are the sons of Bilhah, which Laban gave unto Rachel his daughter, and she bare these unto Jacob: all the souls were seven. | 25These were the sons born to Jacob by Bilhah, whom Laban had given to his daughter Rachel--seven in all. |
| 26All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins, besides Jacob's sons' wives, all the souls were threescore and six; | 26All those who went to Egypt with Jacob--those who were his direct descendants, not counting his sons' wives--numbered sixty-six persons. |
| 27And the sons of Joseph, which were born him in Egypt, were two souls: all the souls of the house of Jacob, which came into Egypt, were threescore and ten. | 27With the two sons who had been born to Joseph in Egypt, the members of Jacob's family, which went to Egypt, were seventy in all. |
| 28And he sent Judah before him unto Joseph, to direct his face unto Goshen; and they came into the land of Goshen. | 28Now Jacob sent Judah ahead of him to Joseph to get directions to Goshen. When they arrived in the region of Goshen, |
| 29And Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen, and presented himself unto him; and he fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while. | 29Joseph had his chariot made ready and went to Goshen to meet his father Israel. As soon as Joseph appeared before him, he threw his arms around his father and wept for a long time. |
| 30And Israel said unto Joseph, Now let me die, since I have seen thy face, because thou art yet alive. | 30Israel said to Joseph, "Now I am ready to die, since I have seen for myself that you are still alive." |
| 31And Joseph said unto his brethren, and unto his father's house, I will go up, and shew Pharaoh, and say unto him, My brethren, and my father's house, which were in the land of Canaan, are come unto me; | 31Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father's household, "I will go up and speak to Pharaoh and will say to him, 'My brothers and my father's household, who were living in the land of Canaan, have come to me. |
| 32And the men are shepherds, for their trade hath been to feed cattle; and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have. | 32The men are shepherds; they tend livestock, and they have brought along their flocks and herds and everything they own.' |
| 33And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shall call you, and shall say, What is your occupation? | 33When Pharaoh calls you in and asks, 'What is your occupation?' |
| 34That ye shall say, Thy servants' trade hath been about cattle from our youth even until now, both we, and also our fathers: that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination unto the Egyptians. | 34you should answer, 'Your servants have tended livestock from our boyhood on, just as our fathers did.' Then you will be allowed to settle in the region of Goshen, for all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians." |
