| 1Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations. | 1Accept anyone who is weak in faith, but not for the purpose of arguing over differences of opinion. |
| 2For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs. | 2One person believes that he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. |
| 3Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him. | 3The person who eats any kind of food must not ridicule the person who does not eat them, and the person who does not eat certain foods must not criticize the person who eats them, for God has accepted him. |
| 4Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand. | 4Who are you to criticize someone else's servant? He stands or falls before his own Lord—and stand he will, because the Lord makes him stand. |
| 5One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. | 5One person decides in favor of one day over another, while another person decides that all days are the same. Let each one be fully convinced in his own mind: |
| 6He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. | 6The one who observes a special day, observes it to honor the Lord. The one who eats, eats to honor the Lord, since he gives thanks to God. And the one who does not eat, refrains from eating to honor the Lord; yet he, too, gives thanks to God. |
| 7For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. | 7For none of us lives for himself, and no one dies for himself. |
| 8For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's. | 8If we live, we live to honor the Lord; and if we die, we die to honor the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. |
| 9For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living. | 9For this reason the Messiah died and returned to life, so that he might become the Lord of both the dead and the living. |
| 10But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. | 10Why, then, do you criticize your brother? Or why do you despise your brother? For all of us will stand before the judgment seat of God. |
| 11For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. | 11For it is written, "As certainly as I live, declares the Lord, every knee will bow to me, and every tongue will praise God." |
| 12So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God. | 12Consequently, each of us will give an account of himself to God. |
| 13Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way. | 13Therefore, let's no longer criticize each other. Instead, make up your mind not to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. |
| 14I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean. | 14I know—and have been persuaded by the Lord Jesus—that nothing is unclean in and of itself, but it is unclean to a person who thinks it is unclean. |
| 15But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died. | 15For if your brother is being hurt by what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not destroy the person for whom the Messiah died by what you eat. |
| 16Let not then your good be evil spoken of: | 16Do not allow what seems good to you to be spoken of as evil. |
| 17For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. | 17For God's kingdom does not consist of food and drink, but of righteousness, peace, and joy produced by the Holy Spirit. |
| 18For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men. | 18For the person who serves the Messiah in this way is pleasing to God and approved by people. |
| 19Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another. | 19Therefore, let's keep on pursuing those things that bring peace and that lead to building up one another. |
| 20For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence. | 20Do not destroy God's action for the sake of food. Everything is clean, but it is wrong to make another person stumble because of what you eat. |
| 21It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak. | 21The right thing to do is to avoid eating meat, drinking wine, or doing anything else that makes your brother stumble, upset, or weak. |
| 22Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth. | 22As for the faith you do have, have it as your own conviction before God. How blessed is the person who has no reason to condemn himself because of what he approves! |
| 23And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin. | 23But the person who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not act in faith; and anything that is not done in faith is sin. |
