| 1And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot's house, named Rahab, and lodged there. | 1After this, Nun's son Joshua sent two men from the Acacia groves as undercover scouts. He told them, "Go and look over the land. Pay special attention to Jericho." So they went out, came to the house of a prostitute named Rahab, and lodged there. |
| 2And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to night of the children of Israel to search out the country. | 2Then the king of Jericho was told, "Look! Israeli men arrived tonight to scout out the land." |
| 3And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, which are entered into thine house: for they be come to search out all the country. | 3So the king of Jericho sent for Rahab and ordered her, "Bring out the men who came to visit you and lodged in your house, because they've come to scout out the entire land." |
| 4And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said thus, There came men unto me, but I wist not whence they were: | 4Now the woman had taken the two men and hid them. So she replied, "The men really did come to me, but I didn't know from where they came. |
| 5And it came to pass about the time of shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out: whither the men went I wot not: pursue after them quickly; for ye shall overtake them. | 5At dusk, when it was time to close the city gates, the men left. I don't know where the men went. Go after them quickly, and you might overtake them." |
| 6But she had brought them up to the roof of the house, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof. | 6But she had taken them up to the roof and had hidden them among stalks of flax that she had laid out in order on the roof. |
| 7And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they which pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate. | 7So the men pursued them along the road that leads to the fords of the Jordan River. As soon as the search party had left, they shut the city gate after them. |
| 8And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof; | 8Before the scouts had lain down, she went up to them on the roof |
| 9And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you. | 9"I'm really convinced that the LORD has given you the land," she said, "because we're overwhelmed with fear of you. All the other inhabitants of the land are demoralized at your presence, |
| 10For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed. | 10because we heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Reed Sea right in front of you as you were coming out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were on the other side of the Jordan River—to Sihon and Og—whom you completely destroyed. |
| 11And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath. | 11When we heard these reports, we all became terrified and discouraged because of you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath. |
| 12Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father's house, and give me a true token: | 12Now therefore, since I've treated you so kindly, please swear in the name of the LORD that you'll also be kind to my father's household by giving me this sure sign: |
| 13And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death. | 13Spare my father, my mother, and my brothers and sisters, along with everyone who belongs with them so we won't be killed." |
| 14And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the LORD hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee. | 14So the men told her, "Our life for yours—even to death—if you don't betray this mission of ours. Then when the LORD gives us this land, we'll treat you graciously and faithfully." |
| 15Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall. | 15So she let them down by a rope through the window, since her house was built into the town wall where she lived. |
| 16And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way. | 16She told them, "Go out to the hill country, so the search party won't find you, and hide for three days. After that, you may go on your own way." |
| 17And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear. | 17The men replied, "We'll be free from our commitment to you to which you've obligated us |
| 18Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father's household, home unto thee. | 18when we invade the land, if you don't tie this rope made with red cords in the window through which you let us down, and if you don't gather your father, your mother, your brothers, and all of the rest of your father's household into your house. |
| 19And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him. | 19Everyone who leaves through the doors of your house into the street will be responsible for his own death, but we'll be responsible for anyone who remains with you in the house if even so much as a hand is laid on him. |
| 20And if thou utter this our business, then we will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear. | 20But if you report this incident, we'll be free from the oath to which you've made us swear." |
| 21And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window. | 21"Since you put it that way," she replied, "I agree." After she sent them on their way and they had left, she tied the red cord in the window. |
| 22And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not. | 22The scouts left for the hill country and remained there for three days until the search party returned. The search party searched the entire road, but was unable to find them. |
| 23So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all things that befell them: | 23Later, the two men returned from the hill country, crossed over the Jordan River, approached Nun's son Joshua, and told him everything that had happened to them. |
| 24And they said unto Joshua, Truly the LORD hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us. | 24They reported to Joshua, "The LORD really has given the entire land into our control. The inhabitants of the land have melted away right in front of us!" |
