And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, | 1The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, " |
This is the ordinance of the law which the LORD hath commanded, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring thee a red heifer without spot, wherein is no blemish, and upon which never came yoke: | 2This is the legal statute that the LORD has commanded: Instruct the Israelites to bring you an unblemished red cow that has no defect and has never been yoked. |
And ye shall give her unto Eleazar the priest, that he may bring her forth without the camp, and one shall slay her before his face: | 3Give it to Eleazar the priest, and he will have it brought outside the camp and slaughtered in his presence. |
And Eleazar the priest shall take of her blood with his finger, and sprinkle of her blood directly before the tabernacle of the congregation seven times: | 4Eleazar the priest is to take some of its blood with his finger and sprinkle it seven times toward the front of the tent of meeting. |
And one shall burn the heifer in his sight; her skin, and her flesh, and her blood, with her dung, shall he burn: | 5The cow must be burned in his sight. Its hide, flesh, and blood, are to be burned along with its dung. |
And the priest shall take cedar wood, and hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the midst of the burning of the heifer. | 6The priest is to take cedar wood, hyssop, and crimson yarn, and throw them onto the fire where the cow is burning. |
Then the priest shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp, and the priest shall be unclean until the even. | 7Then the priest must wash his clothes and bathe his body in water; after that he may enter the camp, but he will remain ceremonially unclean until evening. |
And he that burneth her shall wash his clothes in water, and bathe his flesh in water, and shall be unclean until the even. | 8The one who burned the cow must also wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and he will remain unclean until evening." |
And a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up without the camp in a clean place, and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for a water of separation: it is a purification for sin. | 9A man who is clean is to gather up the cow's ashes and deposit them outside the camp in a ceremonially clean place. The ashes must be kept by the Israelite community for preparing the water to remove impurity; it is a sin offering. |
And he that gathereth the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: and it shall be unto the children of Israel, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among them, for a statute for ever. | 10Then the one who gathers up the cow's ashes must wash his clothes, and he will remain unclean until evening. This is a permanent statute for the Israelites and for the foreigner who resides among them." |
He that toucheth the dead body of any man shall be unclean seven days. | 11The person who touches any human corpse will be unclean for seven days. |
He shall purify himself with it on the third day, and on the seventh day he shall be clean: but if he purify not himself the third day, then the seventh day he shall not be clean. | 12He is to purify himself with the water on the third day and the seventh day; then he will be clean. But if he does not purify himself on the third and seventh days, he will not be clean. |
Whosoever toucheth the dead body of any man that is dead, and purifieth not himself, defileth the tabernacle of the LORD; and that soul shall be cut off from Israel: because the water of separation was not sprinkled upon him, he shall be unclean; his uncleanness is yet upon him. | 13Anyone who touches a body of a person who has died, and does not purify himself, defiles the tabernacle of the LORD. That person will be cut off from Israel. He remains unclean because the water for impurity has not been sprinkled on him, and his uncleanness is still on him." |
This is the law, when a man dieth in a tent: all that come into the tent, and all that is in the tent, shall be unclean seven days. | 14This is the law when a person dies in a tent: everyone who enters the tent and everyone who is already in the tent will be unclean for seven days, |
And every open vessel, which hath no covering bound upon it, is unclean. | 15and any open container without a lid tied on it is unclean. |
And whosoever toucheth one that is slain with a sword in the open fields, or a dead body, or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days. | 16Anyone in the open field who touches a person who has been killed by the sword or has died, or who even touches a human bone, or a grave, will be unclean for seven days. |
And for an unclean person they shall take of the ashes of the burnt heifer of purification for sin, and running water shall be put thereto in a vessel: | 17For the purification of the unclean person, they are to take some of the ashes of the burnt sin offering, put them in a jar, and add fresh water to them. |
And a clean person shall take hyssop, and dip it in the water, and sprinkle it upon the tent, and upon all the vessels, and upon the persons that were there, and upon him that touched a bone, or one slain, or one dead, or a grave: | 18A person who is clean is to take hyssop, dip it in the water, and sprinkle the tent, all the furnishings, and the people who were there. He is also to sprinkle the one who touched a bone, a grave, a corpse, or a person who had been killed." |
And the clean person shall sprinkle upon the unclean on the third day, and on the seventh day: and on the seventh day he shall purify himself, and wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and shall be clean at even. | 19The one who is clean is to sprinkle the unclean person on the third day and the seventh day. After he purifies the unclean person on the seventh day, the one being purified must wash his clothes and bathe in water, and he will be clean by evening. |
But the man that shall be unclean, and shall not purify himself, that soul shall be cut off from among the congregation, because he hath defiled the sanctuary of the LORD: the water of separation hath not been sprinkled upon him; he is unclean. | 20But a person who is unclean and does not purify himself, that person will be cut off from the assembly because he has defiled the sanctuary of the LORD. The water for impurity has not been sprinkled on him; he is unclean. |
And it shall be a perpetual statute unto them, that he that sprinkleth the water of separation shall wash his clothes; and he that toucheth the water of separation shall be unclean until even. | 21This is a permanent statute for them. The person who sprinkles the water for impurity is to wash his clothes, and whoever touches the water for impurity will be unclean until evening. |
And whatsoever the unclean person toucheth shall be unclean; and the soul that toucheth it shall be unclean until even. | 22Anything the unclean person touches will become unclean, and anyone who touches it will be unclean until evening." |
