King James Bible | English Standard Version |
Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, | 1Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers, |
That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. | 2not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by a spirit or a spoken word, or a letter seeming to be from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. |
Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; | 3Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, |
Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. | 4who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. |
Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? | 5Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? |
And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. | 6And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time. |
For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. | 7For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way. |
And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: | 8And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming. |
Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, | 9The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, |
And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. | 10and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. |
And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: | 11Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, |
That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. | 12in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. |
But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: | 13But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. |
Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 14To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle. | 15So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter. |
Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, | 16Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, |
Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work. | 17comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word. |
