Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, | 1Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him: We ask you, brothers and sisters, |
That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. | 2not to be easily upset or troubled, either by a prophecy or by a message or by a letter supposedly from us, alleging that the day of the Lord has come. |
Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; | 3Don't let anyone deceive you in any way. For that day will not come unless the apostasy comes first and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. |
Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. | 4He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he sits in God's temple, proclaiming that he himself is God. |
Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? | 5Don't you remember that when I was still with you I used to tell you about this? |
And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. | 6And you know what currently restrains him, so that he will be revealed in his time. |
For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. | 7For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but the one now restraining will do so until he is out of the way, |
And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: | 8and then the lawless one will be revealed. The Lord Jesus will destroy him with the breath of his mouth and will bring him to nothing at the appearance of his coming. |
Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, | 9The coming of the lawless one is based on Satan's working, with all kinds of false miracles, signs, and wonders, |
And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. | 10and with every wicked deception among those who are perishing. They perish because they did not accept the love of the truth and so be saved. |
And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: | 11For this reason God sends them a strong delusion so that they will believe the lie, |
That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. | 12so that all will be condemned--those who did not believe the truth but delighted in unrighteousness. |
But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: | 13But we ought to thank God always for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God has chosen you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. |
Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 14He called you to this through our gospel, so that you might obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle. | 15So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold to the traditions you were taught, whether by what we said or what we wrote. |
Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, | 16May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal encouragement and good hope by grace, |
Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work. | 17encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good work and word. |
