Psalm 55
ISV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
International Standard VersionNew Living Translation
Pay attention to my prayer, God, and do not hide yourself from my appeal.1Listen to my prayer, O God. Do not ignore my cry for help!
Pay attention to me and answer me. I moan and groan in my thoughts,2Please listen and answer me, for I am overwhelmed by my troubles.
because of the voice of the enemy, and because of the oppression of the wicked. They bring down evil upon me, and in anger they hate me.3My enemies shout at me, making loud and wicked threats. They bring trouble on me and angrily hunt me down.
My heart is trembling within me, and the terrors of death have assaulted me.4My heart pounds in my chest. The terror of death assaults me.
Fear and trembling have overwhelmed me, and horror has covered me.5Fear and trembling overwhelm me, and I can’t stop shaking.
I said, "O, who will give me the wings of a dove, so that I could fly away and live somewhere else?6Oh, that I had wings like a dove; then I would fly away and rest!
Look, I want to flee far away; I want to settle down in the wilderness. Interlude7I would fly far away to the quiet of the wilderness. Interlude
I want to deliver myself quickly from this windstorm and tempest."8How quickly I would escape— far from this wild storm of hatred.
Confound them, Lord, and confuse their speech, because I have seen violence and strife in the city.9Confuse them, Lord, and frustrate their plans, for I see violence and conflict in the city.
Day and night they prowl around its walls; evil and iniquity are within it.10Its walls are patrolled day and night against invaders, but the real danger is wickedness within the city.
Wickedness is at the center of it; fraud and lies never leave its streets.11Everything is falling apart; threats and cheating are rampant in the streets.
For it is not an enemy who insults me— I could have handled that— nor is it someone who hates me and who now arises against me— I could have hidden myself from him—12It is not an enemy who taunts me— I could bear that. It is not my foes who so arrogantly insult me— I could have hidden from them.
but it is you— a man whom I treated as my equal— my personal confidant, my close friend!13Instead, it is you—my equal, my companion and close friend.
We had good fellowship together; and we even walked together in the house of God!14What good fellowship we once enjoyed as we walked together to the house of God.
Let death seize them! May they be plunged alive into the afterlife, for wicked things are in their homes and among them.15Let death stalk my enemies; let the grave swallow them alive, for evil makes its home within them.
I call upon God, and the LORD will deliver me.16But I will call on God, and the LORD will rescue me.
Morning, noon, and night, I mulled over these things and cried out in my distress, and he heard my voice.17Morning, noon, and night I cry out in my distress, and the LORD hears my voice.
He calmly ransomed my soul from the war waged against me, for there was a vast crowd who stood against me.18He ransoms me and keeps me safe from the battle waged against me, though many still oppose me.
God, who is enthroned from long ago, will hear me and humble them. Interlude Because they do not repent, they do not fear God.19God, who has ruled forever, will hear me and humble them. Interlude For my enemies refuse to change their ways; they do not fear God.
Each of my friends raises his hand against his allies; each of my friends breaks his word. 20As for my companion, he betrayed his friends; he broke his promises.
His mouth is as smooth as butter, while war is in his heart. His words were as smooth as olive oil, while his sword is drawn.21His words are as smooth as butter, but in his heart is war. His words are as soothing as lotion, but underneath are daggers!
Cast on the LORD whatever he sends your way, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.22Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.
But you, God, bring them down to the Pit of corruption; bloodthirsty and deceitful people will not live out half their days. But I put my full confidence in you.23But you, O God, will send the wicked down to the pit of destruction. Murderers and liars will die young, but I am trusting you to save me.
