Pay attention to my prayer, God, and do not hide yourself from my appeal. | 1For the music director, to be accompanied by stringed instruments; a well-written song by David. Listen, O God, to my prayer! Do not ignore my appeal for mercy! |
Pay attention to me and answer me. I moan and groan in my thoughts, | 2Pay attention to me and answer me! I am so upset and distressed, I am beside myself, |
because of the voice of the enemy, and because of the oppression of the wicked. They bring down evil upon me, and in anger they hate me. | 3because of what the enemy says, and because of how the wicked pressure me, for they hurl trouble down upon me and angrily attack me. |
My heart is trembling within me, and the terrors of death have assaulted me. | 4My heart beats violently within me; the horrors of death overcome me. |
Fear and trembling have overwhelmed me, and horror has covered me. | 5Fear and panic overpower me; terror overwhelms me. |
I said, "O, who will give me the wings of a dove, so that I could fly away and live somewhere else? | 6I say, "I wish I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and settle in a safe place! |
Look, I want to flee far away; I want to settle down in the wilderness. Interlude | 7Look, I will escape to a distant place; I will stay in the wilderness. (Selah) |
I want to deliver myself quickly from this windstorm and tempest." | 8I will hurry off to a place that is safe from the strong wind and the gale." |
Confound them, Lord, and confuse their speech, because I have seen violence and strife in the city. | 9Confuse them, O Lord! Frustrate their plans! For I see violence and conflict in the city. |
Day and night they prowl around its walls; evil and iniquity are within it. | 10Day and night they walk around on its walls, while wickedness and destruction are within it. |
Wickedness is at the center of it; fraud and lies never leave its streets. | 11Disaster is within it; violence and deceit do not depart from its public square. |
For it is not an enemy who insults me— I could have handled that— nor is it someone who hates me and who now arises against me— I could have hidden myself from him— | 12Indeed, it is not an enemy who insults me, or else I could bear it; it is not one who hates me who arrogantly taunts me, or else I could hide from him. |
but it is you— a man whom I treated as my equal— my personal confidant, my close friend! | 13But it is you, a man like me, my close friend in whom I confided. |
We had good fellowship together; and we even walked together in the house of God! | 14We would share personal thoughts with each other; in God's temple we would walk together among the crowd. |
Let death seize them! May they be plunged alive into the afterlife, for wicked things are in their homes and among them. | 15May death destroy them! May they go down alive into Sheol! For evil is in their dwelling place and in their midst. |
I call upon God, and the LORD will deliver me. | 16As for me, I will call out to God, and the LORD will deliver me. |
Morning, noon, and night, I mulled over these things and cried out in my distress, and he heard my voice. | 17During the evening, morning, and noontime I will lament and moan, and he will hear me. |
He calmly ransomed my soul from the war waged against me, for there was a vast crowd who stood against me. | 18He will rescue me and protect me from those who attack me, even though they greatly outnumber me. |
God, who is enthroned from long ago, will hear me and humble them. Interlude Because they do not repent, they do not fear God. | 19God, the one who has reigned as king from long ago, will hear and humiliate them. (Selah) They refuse to change, and do not fear God. |
Each of my friends raises his hand against his allies; each of my friends breaks his word. | 20He attacks his friends; he breaks his solemn promises to them. |
His mouth is as smooth as butter, while war is in his heart. His words were as smooth as olive oil, while his sword is drawn. | 21His words are as smooth as butter, but he harbors animosity in his heart. His words seem softer than oil, but they are really like sharp swords. |
Cast on the LORD whatever he sends your way, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be shaken. | 22Throw your burden upon the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the godly to be upended. |
But you, God, bring them down to the Pit of corruption; bloodthirsty and deceitful people will not live out half their days. But I put my full confidence in you. | 23But you, O God, will bring them down to the deep Pit. Violent and deceitful people will not live even half a normal lifespan. But as for me, I trust in you. |
