International Standard Version | New Living Translation |
If the LORD had not been on our side— let Israel now say— | 1What if the LORD had not been on our side? Let all Israel repeat: |
if the LORD had not been on our side, when men came against us, | 2What if the LORD had not been on our side when people attacked us? |
then they would have devoured us alive, when their anger burned against us. | 3They would have swallowed us alive in their burning anger. |
Then the flood waters would have overwhelmed us, the torrent would have flooded over us; | 4The waters would have engulfed us; a torrent would have overwhelmed us. |
the swollen waters would have swept us away. | 5Yes, the raging waters of their fury would have overwhelmed our very lives. |
Blessed be the LORD, who did not give us as prey to their teeth. | 6Praise the LORD, who did not let their teeth tear us apart! |
We have escaped like a bird from the hunter's trap. The trap has been broken, and we have escaped. | 7We escaped like a bird from a hunter’s trap. The trap is broken, and we are free! |
Our help is in the name of the LORD, the maker of heaven and earth. | 8Our help is from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. |
