If the LORD had not been on our side— let Israel now say— | 1A song of ascents. Of David. If the LORD had not been on our side-- let Israel say-- |
if the LORD had not been on our side, when men came against us, | 2if the LORD had not been on our side when people attacked us, |
then they would have devoured us alive, when their anger burned against us. | 3they would have swallowed us alive when their anger flared against us; |
Then the flood waters would have overwhelmed us, the torrent would have flooded over us; | 4the flood would have engulfed us, the torrent would have swept over us, |
the swollen waters would have swept us away. | 5the raging waters would have swept us away. |
Blessed be the LORD, who did not give us as prey to their teeth. | 6Praise be to the LORD, who has not let us be torn by their teeth. |
We have escaped like a bird from the hunter's trap. The trap has been broken, and we have escaped. | 7We have escaped like a bird from the fowler's snare; the snare has been broken, and we have escaped. |
Our help is in the name of the LORD, the maker of heaven and earth. | 8Our help is in the name of the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. |
