| 4Nadab and Abihu died in the LORD's presence when they offered unauthorized fire before him in the Sinai wilderness. | 7They are to take care of his needs and the needs of the whole congregation at the Tent of Meeting by performing duties at the tent. | 7They are responsible for his needs and the needs of the whole community before the tent of meeting, by attending to the service of the tabernacle. |
| 8They are to take charge of the utensils at the Tent of Meeting and meet the needs of the Israelis by performing duties on behalf of the tent. | 8And they are responsible for all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, and for the needs of the Israelites, as they serve in the tabernacle. |
| 9Assign the descendants of Levi to Aaron and his sons from among the Israelis. | 9You are to assign the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they will be assigned exclusively to him out of all the Israelites. |
| 10Appoint Aaron and his sons so that they are to take responsibility for their priesthood. Any unauthorized person who approaches it is to be put to death." | 10So you are to appoint Aaron and his sons, and they will be responsible for their priesthood; but the unauthorized person who comes near must be put to death." |
| 11Later, the LORD told Moses, | 11Then the LORD spoke to Moses: |
| 12"I'm taking the descendants of Levi for myself from among the Israelis in place of every first-born who opens the womb. The descendants of Levi belong to me | 12"Look, I myself have taken the Levites from among the Israelites instead of every firstborn who opens the womb among the Israelites. So the Levites belong to me, |
| 13because all the first-born belong to me. When I destroyed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I consecrated all the first-born in Israel for myself—from human beings to livestock. They belong to me, since I am the LORD." | 13because all the firstborn are mine. When I destroyed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I set apart for myself all the firstborn in Israel, both man and beast. They belong to me. I am the LORD." |
| 14The LORD also told Moses in the Sinai wilderness, | 14Then the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai: |
| 15"Number the descendants of Levi according to their ancestral houses and tribes, numbering every male from a month old and above." | 15"Number the Levites by their clans and their families; every male from a month old and upward you are to number." |
| 16So Moses numbered them according to the instruction of the LORD, as he had been commanded. | 16So Moses numbered them according to the word of the LORD, just as he had been commanded. |

| 27The families of Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel were descendants of Kohath. | 32The chief of all the leaders of the descendants of Levi was Aaron the priest's son Eleazar. | 35The leader of the tribe and family of Merari was Abihail's son Zuriel. The descendants of Merari encamped beside the tent toward the north. | 35Now the leader of the clan of the families of Merari was Zuriel son of Abihail. These were to camp on the north side of the tabernacle. |
| 36The duties of the caretakers from the descendants of Merari included the boards of the tent, its bars, crossbars, sockets, all its utensils for their services, | 36The appointed responsibilities of the Merarites included the frames of the tabernacle, its crossbars, its posts, its sockets, its utensils, plus all the service connected with these things, |
| 37the pillars around the courtyard, their sockets, pegs, and tent cords. | 37and the pillars of the courtyard all around, with their sockets, their pegs, and their ropes. |
| 38In front of the tent and east of the Tent of Meeting, Moses, Aaron, and Aaron's sons encamped facing the east. They were tasked to perform the duties of the sanctuary and care for the needs of the Israelis. Any unauthorized person who approached was to be executed. | 38But those who were to camp in front of the tabernacle on the east, in front of the tent of meeting, were Moses, Aaron, and his sons. They were responsible for the needs of the sanctuary and for the needs of the Israelites, but the unauthorized person who approached was to be put to death. |

| 41Separate the descendants of Levi for me—since I am the LORD—in place of all the first-born sons of Israel. | 45"Separate the descendants of Levi in place of all the firstborn sons of Israel and the livestock of the descendants of Levi in place of their livestock. The descendants of Levi belong to me, since I am the LORD. | 45"Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn males among the Israelites, and the livestock of the Levites instead of their livestock. And the Levites will be mine. I am the LORD. |
| 46You are to pay a ransom for the 273 first-born Israelis who exceed the census number of the descendants of Levi, | 46And for the redemption of the 273 firstborn males of the Israelites who exceed the number of the Levites, |
| 47so collect five shekels for each individual, denominated in shekels of the sanctuary, that is, the shekel that weighs 20 gerahs. | 47collect five shekels for each one individually; you are to collect this amount in the currency of the sanctuary shekel (this shekel is twenty gerahs). |
| 48Then give the money meant for ransom of their excess to Aaron and his sons." | 48And give the money for the redemption of the excess number of them to Aaron and his sons." |
| 49So Moses took the ransom money to account for the difference in the total number of those redeemed by the descendants of Levi. | 49So Moses took the redemption money from those who were in excess of those redeemed by the Levites. |
