"At that time, the LORD told me, 'Chisel two tablets of stone for yourself just like the first ones, and then come up to me on the mountain. Also make for yourself a wooden chest. | 1At that same time the LORD said to me, "Carve out for yourself two stone tablets like the first ones and come up the mountain to me; also make for yourself a wooden ark. |
I'll write on the tablets what was on the first tablets that you broke. Then place them in the wooden chest.' | 2I will write on the tablets the same words that were on the first tablets you broke, and you must put them into the ark." |
So I made a chest out of acacia wood and chiseled two tablets of stones just like the first ones. Then I went up the mountain with the two tablets in my hands. | 3So I made an ark of acacia wood and carved out two stone tablets just like the first ones. Then I went up the mountain with the two tablets in my hands. |
Then the LORD inscribed on the tablets what he wrote before, that is, the Ten Commandments that the LORD declared to you on the mountain from the middle of the fire during the day of the assembly. And the LORD gave them to me. | 4The LORD then wrote on the tablets the same words, the ten commandments, which he had spoken to you at the mountain from the middle of the fire at the time of that assembly, and he gave them to me. |
Then I turned, went down the mountain, and placed the tablets in the chest that I had made. They are there now, just as the LORD commanded me." | 5Then I turned, went down the mountain, and placed the tablets into the ark I had made--they are still there, just as the LORD commanded me. |
"The Israelis traveled from the wells of the descendants of Jaakan to Moserah. Aaron died, and he was buried there. His son Eleazar succeeded him as priest. | 6"During those days the Israelites traveled from Beeroth Bene-Yaaqan to Moserah. There Aaron died and was buried, and his son Eleazar became priest in his place. |
From there they moved on to Gudgodah and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, a land with flowing streams. | 7From there they traveled to Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, a place of flowing streams. |
At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD, to stand in the LORD's presence, to serve, and to bless his name until this day. | 8At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the LORD's covenant, to stand before the LORD to serve him, and to formulate blessings in his name, as they do to this very day. |
That is why the descendants of Levi do not have a portion and an inheritance among their relatives. As for the LORD, he is their inheritance, just as the LORD your God told them. | 9Therefore Levi has no allotment or inheritance among his brothers; the LORD is his inheritance just as the LORD your God told him. |
When I stood on the mountain for 40 days and 40 nights as I did the first time, the LORD listened to me once again. The LORD was not willing to destroy you. | 10As for me, I stayed at the mountain as I did the first time, forty days and nights. The LORD listened to me that time as well and decided not to destroy you. |
So the LORD told me, 'Get up and proceed to lead the people, so they may enter and take possession of the land that I promised to give their ancestors by an oath.'" | 11Then he said to me, "Get up, set out leading the people so they may go and possess the land I promised to give to their ancestors." |
"Now Israel, what does the LORD your God desire from you? Only this: fear him, walk in all his ways, love him, serve him with all your heart and in all your life, | 12Now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you except to revere him, to obey all his commandments, to love him, to serve him with all your mind and being, |
and observe his commands and statutes that I'm commanding you today for your own good. | 13and to keep the Lord's commandments and statutes that I am giving you today for your own good? |
You see, heaven—even the highest heavens—belongs to the LORD, along with the earth and all that is in it, | 14The heavens--indeed the highest heavens--belong to the LORD your God, as does the earth and everything in it. |
yet the LORD committed himself to love your ancestors—and did so! He chose you—their descendants after them—from all the nations, as it is today. | 15However, only to your ancestors did he show his loving favor, and he chose you, their descendants, from all peoples--as is apparent today. |
Therefore, circumcise your heart and stop being stubborn. | 16Therefore, cleanse your heart and stop being so stubborn! |
For the LORD your God is the God of all gods, the LORD of all lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who does not show favoritism or take bribes. | 17For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, mighty, and awesome God who is unbiased and takes no bribe, |
He executes justice for the orphan and the widows, loves the foreigner, and gives them food and clothing." | 18who justly treats the orphan and widow, and who loves resident foreigners, giving them food and clothing. |
"You are to love the foreigner, because you were foreigners in the land of Egypt. | 19So you must love the resident foreigner because you were foreigners in the land of Egypt. |
You are to fear the LORD your God and serve him. Cling to him and swear by his name. | 20Revere the LORD your God, serve him, be loyal to him and take oaths only in his name. |
He is the one you are to praise, because he is, your God who carried out those great and awesome things for you that you witnessed. | 21He is the one you should praise; he is your God, the one who has done these great and awesome things for you that you have seen. |
Your ancestors went down to Egypt with 70 people, but the LORD your God has now made you as numerous as the stars in the sky." | 22When your ancestors went down to Egypt, they numbered only seventy, but now the LORD your God has made you as numerous as the stars of the sky. |
