1"Now I'll conclude with this: my heart is trembling violently; it feels like it's about to leap from my body! | 1My heart pounds at this and leaps from my chest. |
2Listen carefully to his thundering voice; to the sound that rumbles from his mouth. | 2Just listen to His thunderous voice and the rumbling that comes from His mouth. |
3He releases his lightning throughout the sky, to the ends of the earth. | 3He lets it loose beneath the entire sky; His lightning to the ends of the earth. |
4His thunder roars after it; his majestic voice will thunder; and no one can trace them once his voice has been heard. | 4Then there comes a roaring sound; God thunders with His majestic voice. He does not restrain the lightning when His rumbling voice is heard. |
5"God thunders with his wondrous voice; he does awesome works that we don't comprehend. | 5God thunders marvelously with His voice; He does great things that we cannot comprehend. |
6For he says to the snow, 'Fall to the earth.' He tells the rain, 'Pour down,' then it rains profusely. | 6For He says to the snow, "Fall to the earth," and the torrential rains, His mighty torrential rains, |
7"He puts a limit to the skill of every person; to delineate all people from what they do. | 7serve as His sign to all mankind, so that all men may know His work. |
8"Then a beast enters its lair and remains in its den. | 8The wild animals enter their lairs and stay in their dens. |
9"From the south, a whirlwind proceeds, out of the icy north winds. | 9The windstorm comes from its chamber, and the cold from the driving north winds. |
10From the breath of God ice is produced, and a wide body of water is frozen. | 10Ice is formed by the breath of God, and watery expanses are frozen. |
11He also loads the clouds with moisture, scattering his lightning with the clouds. | 11He saturates clouds with moisture; He scatters His lightning through them. |
12It whirls about in circles at his direction to accomplish all that he commands throughout the surface of the entire world, | 12They swirl about, turning round and round at His direction, accomplishing everything He commands them over the surface of the inhabited world. |
13whether for discipline on his land or to demonstrate his gracious love, he causes it to be realized." | 13He causes this to happen for punishment, for His land, or for His faithful love. |
14"Pay attention to this, Job! Stand still, and consider the wondrous attributes of God. | 14Listen to this, Job. Stop and consider God's wonders. |
15Do you know how God ordains them, and makes his lightning to flash throughout his clouds? | 15Do you know how God directs His clouds or makes their lightning flash? |
16Do you understand his wondrous work of balancing the clouds, the one whose knowledge is perfect, | 16Do you understand how the clouds float, those wonderful works of Him who has perfect knowledge? |
17you whose garments are hot, even though the land is cooled by a south wind? | 17You whose clothes get hot when the south wind brings calm to the land, |
18Can you spread out the skies like he does; can you cast them as one might a mirror? | 18can you help God spread out the skies as hard as a cast metal mirror? |
19Tell us! What are we to say to him? Can we prepare our case to face him when our faces are in darkness? | 19Teach us what we should say to Him; we cannot prepare our case because of our darkness. |
20Has it been relayed to God that I want to talk? Can a person speak when he is confused?" | 20Should He be told that I want to speak? Can a man speak when he is confused? |
21"So then, the sun is too bright to gaze at, is it not? The sky is swept clean by the wind that blows, is it not? | 21Now men cannot even look at the sun when it is in the skies, after a wind has swept through and cleared them away. |
22From the north he brings gold; around God is awesome splendor. | 22Yet out of the north He comes, shrouded in a golden glow; awesome majesty surrounds Him. |
23We cannot find the Almighty— he is majestic in power and justice, and overflowing with righteousness; he never oppresses. | 23The Almighty--we cannot reach Him-- He is exalted in power! He will not oppress justice and abundant righteousness, |
24Therefore humanity fears him, which none of the wise can quite comprehend." | 24Therefore, men fear Him. He does not look favorably on any who are wise in heart. |
