International Standard Version | Holman Christian Standard Bible |
Now we ask you, brothers, regarding the coming of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, and our gathering together to him, | 1Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to Him: We ask you, brothers, |
not to be so quickly upset or alarmed when someone claims that we said, either by some spirit, conversation, or letter that the Day of the Lord has already come. | 2not to be easily upset in mind or troubled, either by a spirit or by a message or by a letter as if from us, alleging that the Day of the Lord has come. |
Do not let anyone deceive you in any way, for it will not come unless the rebellion takes place first and the man of sin, who is destined for destruction, is revealed. | 3Don't let anyone deceive you in any way. For that day will not come unless the apostasy comes first and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction. |
He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god and object of worship. As a result, he seats himself in the sanctuary of God and himself declares that he is God. | 4He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he sits in God's sanctuary, publicizing that he himself is God. |
Don't you remember that I repeatedly told you about these things when I was still with you? | 5Don't you remember that when I was still with you I told you about this? |
You know what it is that is now holding him back, so that he will be revealed when his time comes. | 6And you know what currently restrains him, so that he will be revealed in his time. |
For the secret of this lawlessness is already at work, but only until the person now holding it back gets out of the way. | 7For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but the one now restraining will do so until he is out of the way, |
Then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will destroy with the breath of his mouth, rendering him powerless by the manifestation of his coming. | 8and then the lawless one will be revealed. The Lord Jesus will destroy him with the breath of His mouth and will bring him to nothing with the brightness of His coming. |
The coming of the lawless one will be accompanied by the power of Satan. He will use every kind of power, including miraculous signs, lying wonders, | 9The coming of the lawless one is based on Satan's working, with all kinds of false miracles, signs, and wonders, |
and every type of evil to deceive those who are dying, those who refused to love the truth that would save them. | 10and with every unrighteous deception among those who are perishing. They perish because they did not accept the love of the truth in order to be saved. |
For this reason, God will send them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie. | 11For this reason God sends them a strong delusion so that they will believe what is false, |
Then all who have not believed the truth but have taken pleasure in unrighteousness will be condemned. | 12so that all will be condemned--those who did not believe the truth but enjoyed unrighteousness. |
At all times we are obligated to thank God for you, brothers who are loved by the Lord, because God chose you to be the first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through faith in the truth. | 13But we must always thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God has chosen you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. |
With this purpose in mind, he called you through our proclamation of the gospel so that you would obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah. | 14He called you to this through our gospel, so that you might obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
So then, brothers, stand firm, and cling to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter. | 15Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions you were taught, either by our message or by our letter. |
May our Lord Jesus, the Messiah himself, and may God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, | 16May our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal encouragement and good hope by grace, |
encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good action and word. | 17encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good work and word. |
