Holman Christian Standard Bible | New Living Translation |
For the choir director: "Do Not Destroy." A Davidic Miktam. When Saul sent agents to watch the house and kill him. Deliver me from my enemies, my God; protect me from those who rise up against me. | 1Rescue me from my enemies, O God. Protect me from those who have come to destroy me. |
Deliver me from those who practice sin, and save me from men of bloodshed. | 2Rescue me from these criminals; save me from these murderers. |
LORD, look! They set an ambush for me. Powerful men attack me, but not because of any sin or rebellion of mine. | 3They have set an ambush for me. Fierce enemies are out there waiting, LORD, though I have not sinned or offended them. |
For no fault of mine, they run and take up a position. Awake to help me, and take notice. | 4I have done nothing wrong, yet they prepare to attack me. Wake up! See what is happening and help me! |
LORD God of Hosts, You are the God of Israel, rise up to punish all the nations; do not show grace to any wicked traitors. Selah | 5O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, wake up and punish those hostile nations. Show no mercy to wicked traitors. Interlude |
They return at evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city. | 6They come out at night, snarling like vicious dogs as they prowl the streets. |
Look, they spew from their mouths-- sharp words from their lips." For who," they say, "will hear?" | 7Listen to the filth that comes from their mouths; their words cut like swords. “After all, who can hear us?” they sneer. |
But You laugh at them, LORD; You ridicule all the nations. | 8But LORD, you laugh at them. You scoff at all the hostile nations. |
I will keep watch for You, my strength, because God is my stronghold. | 9You are my strength; I wait for you to rescue me, for you, O God, are my fortress. |
My faithful God will come to meet me; God will let me look down on my adversaries. | 10In his unfailing love, my God will stand with me. He will let me look down in triumph on all my enemies. |
Do not kill them; otherwise, my people will forget. By Your power, make them homeless wanderers and bring them down, Lord, our shield. | 11Don’t kill them, for my people soon forget such lessons; stagger them with your power, and bring them to their knees, O Lord our shield. |
For the sin of their mouths and the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride. They utter curses and lies. | 12Because of the sinful things they say, because of the evil that is on their lips, let them be captured by their pride, their curses, and their lies. |
Consume them in rage; consume them until they are gone. Then people will know throughout the earth that God rules over Jacob. Selah | 13Destroy them in your anger! Wipe them out completely! Then the whole world will know that God reigns in Israel. Interlude |
And they return at evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city. | 14My enemies come out at night, snarling like vicious dogs as they prowl the streets. |
They scavenge for food; they growl if they are not satisfied. | 15They scavenge for food but go to sleep unsatisfied. |
But I will sing of Your strength and will joyfully proclaim Your faithful love in the morning. For You have been a stronghold for me, a refuge in my day of trouble. | 16But as for me, I will sing about your power. Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love. For you have been my refuge, a place of safety when I am in distress. |
To You, my strength, I sing praises, because God is my stronghold-- my faithful God. | 17O my Strength, to you I sing praises, for you, O God, are my refuge, the God who shows me unfailing love. |
