Holman Christian Standard Bible | International Standard Version |
For the choir director: "Do Not Destroy." A Davidic Miktam. When Saul sent agents to watch the house and kill him. Deliver me from my enemies, my God; protect me from those who rise up against me. | 1Save me from my enemies, my God! Keep me safe from those who rise up against me. |
Deliver me from those who practice sin, and save me from men of bloodshed. | 2Save me from those who practice evil; deliver me from bloodthirsty men. |
LORD, look! They set an ambush for me. Powerful men attack me, but not because of any sin or rebellion of mine. | 3Look, they lie in ambush for my life; these violent men gather together against me, but not because of any transgression or sin of mine, LORD. |
For no fault of mine, they run and take up a position. Awake to help me, and take notice. | 4Without any fault on my part, they rush together and prepare themselves. Get up! Come help me! Pay attention! |
LORD God of Hosts, You are the God of Israel, rise up to punish all the nations; do not show grace to any wicked traitors. Selah | 5You, LORD God of the Heavenly Armies, God of Israel, stir yourself up to punish all the nations. Show no mercy to those wicked transgressors. Interlude |
They return at evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city. | 6At night they return like howling dogs; they prowl around the city. |
Look, they spew from their mouths-- sharp words from their lips." For who," they say, "will hear?" | 7Look what pours out of their mouths! They use their lips like swords, saying "Who will hear us?" |
But You laugh at them, LORD; You ridicule all the nations. | 8But you, LORD, will laugh at them; you will mock all the nations. |
I will keep watch for You, my strength, because God is my stronghold. | 9My Strength, I will watch for you, for God is my fortress. |
My faithful God will come to meet me; God will let me look down on my adversaries. | 10My God of Gracious Love will meet me; God will enable me to see what happens to my enemies. |
Do not kill them; otherwise, my people will forget. By Your power, make them homeless wanderers and bring them down, Lord, our shield. | 11Don't kill them! Otherwise, my people may forget. By your power make them stumble around; bring them down low, Lord, our Shield. |
For the sin of their mouths and the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride. They utter curses and lies. | 12The sin of their mouth is the word on their lips. They will be caught in their own conceit; for they speak curses and lies. |
Consume them in rage; consume them until they are gone. Then people will know throughout the earth that God rules over Jacob. Selah | 13Go ahead and destroy them in anger! Wipe them out, and they will know to the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob. Interlude |
And they return at evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city. | 14At night they return like howling dogs; they prowl around the city. |
They scavenge for food; they growl if they are not satisfied. | 15They scavenge for food. If they find nothing, they become hungry and growl. |
But I will sing of Your strength and will joyfully proclaim Your faithful love in the morning. For You have been a stronghold for me, a refuge in my day of trouble. | 16But I will sing of your power and in the morning I will shout for joy about your gracious love. For you have been a fortress for me; and a refuge when I am distressed. |
To You, my strength, I sing praises, because God is my stronghold-- my faithful God. | 17My Strength, I will sing praises to you, for you, God of Gracious Love, are my fortress. |
